    So so night but I think I am stressing about a dozen things - last dose of chemo before I go to just herceptin today so a bit excited about that, trying to get the washing done before we head off on holidays - endless thankless task, starting to obsess over radiation treatment and cost - heard a horror story about out of pockets, so worrying about that now, finally told my older sister about diagnosis (only taken me months) and then a million other sub tasks associated with all the above

    Wouldn't it be good to have a pause switch.

    @Sarnicad Have you investigated public system for rads? I went public andfrom what I've heard, there was little difference in what is offered (and none for the actual rad itself) - in some cases,the public seemed to be better - and it's free.  If you really want or need to go private, don't forget that they seem to be very able to negotiate about price.

    @Sarnicad I'm having rads (as I have had everything) in public system and it's excellent. The nurses and technicians are superb. The radiation oncologist is marvellous. She gave me free some StrataXRT gel (worth $172.50 online). Chemo care was also excellent. Won't say the same for surgery and breast care - the word "care" being the missing factor. But for radiation - why pay? You've paid your taxes for years. From friends I know that rads in private was no better.

    This was a friend’s friend who got told $18;000 for oop for private rads. I can tell you it will be straight to the public system if that is the number. There are so many other things I can do with that money particularly if at some stage my whole work thing ends up in the toilet. That is weeks and  weeks of groceries even factoring in 2 growing teenagers - one did nothing but eat yesterday about 5 meals!  This person then went public and also said it was fantastic.

    Will need to to ring the clinic and get them to quote me something for once I’m back from the mini break.

    @tigerbeth inner north west so public would either be Peter Mac in city or sunshine

    have just spoken to clinic and they said they will confirm costs at my appt early October but guesstimate is no more than $3,000 still a lot of money but slightly more palatable!

    @Sarnicad It's your decision of course, but just think what you could do for yourself with $3000 when this is all over.  B)

    @Sarnicad I agree with @Flaneuse
    as far as I know there is no difference in treatment, so I wouldn't bother paying the extra !! It's a lot of money when each session takes about 3 mins !!
    The staff & treatment I had under public was exemplary!
    good luck x

    @Sarnicad,

    I got accepted as a public patient in a private hospital as the local hospital did not do radiation.  Same nurses and radonc looking after me as the people paying a lot of money.

    A lot of people will switch to public for chemo and rads after they have gone private for surgery.

    What I don't understand is people saying you wait longer for surgery in public.  Maybe it's different in different areas, but if you have cancer you normally go to the top of the list straight away and elective surgeries will get moved so you don't have to wait. I see this day in and day out at work, our lists are always getting rearranged for newly diagnosed breast/prostate surgery. .
     Nobody gets left hanging around for months if they need the surgery asap.   Elective stuff is a different ballgame.
     I could have had my surgery the week after diagnosis if I had opted for a mastectomy.  All up it was 1 mth to the day but that was my choice to chase the thing for a lumpectomy.

    @Sarnicad    ....  Yep, confirming everything the ladies have said above .... I had private surgery and public rads, staying in brilliant subsidised accomodation attached to the hospital for rural patients ..... just a 2 min walk to the rads clinic and our own parking space (a real bonus with big public hospitals!)

    However .... I had a SHIT of a night last night!  I Drove down to Sydney in pouring rain at night (4hrs) .... stopped for dinner on the way (fish and chips) so no need to cook once down here .....

    Staying at my brother’s .... it is Freezing cold, (Winter is back). NO electric blanket ..... sharing bed with hubby who was bouncing all over the place with ‘restless leg syndrome’ and then talking to himself loudly thru the night .... I finally fell asleep at about 6am on and off until 10.30!

    Hoping for a better one tonight, but not relying on it!!   :(
