What do you do (or did)?

No Kate. That would be unwise. I'd have to wait until a few people are dead and I'm too old too worry about the consequences. I'm not sure my son or partner would be thrilled to know what I got up to in my 20s and I'm trying to be respectable now5

It’s interesting that the young don’t realise we were young once and enjoyed our lives. But guess I was the same about the previous generation.1

Teacher 10 years, Multicultural Education Consultant 3 yrs (then funding cut), then realised a dream of doing freelance media - writing, producing, directing, some TV and corporate media as well as some print stuff, and part-time university teaching in media studies - 11 years; then projects fell away because of federal budget cuts; then accidentally fell into IT industry - training initially but gradually moved to project management - 13 yrs including eight years in Europe; back to Oz to build "grandma's house" and back into "corporate" media - producing DVDs for Fire & Emergency for two years until 2012 when incoming state govt of that time abolished all govt multi-media units. I was 69 and ADORED work. Took a long time to adjust. Writing a book (biography of an environmentalist/retired politician friend) saved my sanity for 4.5 years. Was working on a memoir when bc diagnosis hit. Shall get back to it.5

@Eastmum wroteHey @BCNA admins - I'm wondering if this thread might light the spark for a professional networking community on this discussion board? Maybe a new private group where people can 'out' their real identities in a safe place if they want to, and list their professional qualifications and/or skill sets if they're happy to offer their services in any way to other members? If for example I need a small job done by a graphic designer, I'd love to know if there was someone here that might be interested in doing the job? I would love to give the work to a 'sister' or 'brother' on these forums. Just might be someone out there who would welcome the distraction, or someone who is actively looking for some work?Hello @Eastmum
Thank you for your post and what great idea. I have spoken with Marianne regarding the professional networking community and discussion board idea, just wonder what other online community members think?3 -
As people have the choice to opt in or not it seems ok.Only query I have is will access be limited to members of the blog as currently any member of the public can read the blog1

Gosh ... where to start ..... whilst doing a Home Economics course in 72/73, I worked part time with a mob who worked with MIMS (Monthly Index of Medical Specialty - that EVERY doctor refers to re 'contraindications' of combined medicines) where we itemised EVERY item from chemists all around Aussie - showing trends & volumes Aussie wide! Initially it was all done 'manually' - then in 1972 we went computerised - and I ended up as a 'manager' of the computerised input - checking at random, other people's work! BUT - then I went back to my 'training' & worked as a 'demonstrator' at AGL for a few years ... teaching people how to cook! What a hoot that was! We used to put $2 in & buy a wine cask (before Breath Testing!) and had a fun night!
After that i worked at RNSH Sydney as a Dietary Aide for many years - making sure patients had the correct meals relative to their conditions - one of my friends was looking after the Cancer Ward & I was in awe of her ability to deal with such emotive patients & still keep sane.
Then, I was headhunted by a company that was bringing in the very first 'Home Computers' into Australia (they were DEC - Digital Equipment Corp) way back in the late 70s ... up til then, everything was pretty well Mainframes (other than Apples, which were only just starting out! Then, I went to work with a mob taking charge of insolvent companies - trying to get them back on the 'right road'! One was called VM Diesels - & one day I answered the phone saying 'VD Measles' ..... I just cracked up, then hung up, MORTIFIED!!
Then I worked as Accounts payable & receivable for one of Aussies biggest Coal mine based at Circular Quay .... I LOVED that job!! But in the mean time, I'd met my husband to be (from NZ) and left Aussie (and the top job), to go to NZ. There, I worked as a 'Permanent Temp' (doing accounts) for 15 years - and some of my 'temp jobs' lasted up to 5 years!! Next, I was head hunted as the secretary of a School where my husband was the metalwork teacher - in Otara - the backdrop of Once were Warriors Movie! Within 2 years, we were ready to leave for Aussie!!
Back in Aussie, we bought a lawn mowing run for 2 years - and I have been retired since about 2002!! (the youngest in a family of 6 & the first to retire!!)
