Treatments for Breast Cancer - Options and Considerations Virtual Conference Thursday July 15 2021
Hello everyone, Join Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) for insight into the latest treatments for breast cancer, as well as for a glimpse into the pioneering research shaping the future of how we treat the disease. This virtual conference is a must-join for people wanting to know about what treatments are available, what treatments are on the horizon and the options and considerations that might impact your own experience, including managing side effects. Renowned international guest speaker, Medical Oncologist and Director of the Breast Oncology Center at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in the United States Dr Eric Winer will deliver a session on ‘new frontiers’ – what the future of breast cancer treatment holds. The conference will be held online on Thursday July 15 6:00pm – 9:00pm and will provide information relevant to patients with both early breast cancer and metastatic disease, delivered by a panel of national experts. The program includes breakout sessions which will provide opportunities for attendees with different needs to access information relevant to their diagnosis and situation, as well as connect with others going through a similar experience. Breakout session options include lymphoedema, genetics and family history, supportive care for metastatic breast cancer and long-term side effects of breast cancer treatment. Hello everyone, Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in Australian women. While breast cancer is most common in women over the age of 50 years, approximately 1,988 of the 20,825 Australians diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021 will be premenopausal women aged between 20 and 44 years of age. Breast cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and hormone-blocking therapy, can impact the fertility of premenopausal/young women diagnosed with breast cancer. If fertility preservation is important to you, there are a range of options available to you. Because of the potential impact of breast cancer treatment on women’s fertility, it is essential that all premenopausal women receive up-to-date, evidence-based information about their fertility preservation options before treatment begins so that you can make decisions about treatment and fertility that reflect your preferences, needs and values. Hello everyone, Please see information on BCNA's website regarding breast density. https://www.bcna.org.au/breast-health-awareness/mammographic-density-and-screening/ BCNA are calling on the following areas of reform for women with dense breasts: Extension of the WA BreastScreen program that advises all women with dense breasts that their screening mammogram is less sensitive to cancers and they should therefore be vigilant in looking for breast changes and speak to their GP if they would like further information on additional screening options such as breast ultrasound, tomosynthesis or breast MRI. Improved Medicare rebates for women with dense breasts who need additional screening options such as breast MRI in order to reduce out-of-pocket costs associated with breast cancer surveillance. Greater funding investment into automated programs that can better determine a woman’s levels of breast density to better assist her to make informed decisions based upon her individual risk. Development of clinical practice guidelines for the management of breast density so that women can be better informed of what their risk of breast cancer is and how they can best screen for breast cancer. Greater research into links between breast density and breast cancer risk.BCNA's breast reconstruction project - Share your views
BCNA's breast reconstruction project - Share your views BCNA wants to make a difference to breast reconstruction in Australia. We have developed a survey to better understand members’ experiences of breast reconstruction, including issues around access, waiting times, the financial impact of reconstruction and the recent impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions on elective surgery which occurred in 2020. You do not have to have undergone a breast reconstruction to take the survey. But you do need to have considered having a mastectomy (either as part of your breast cancer treatment, or as a way to reduce your risk of developing breast cancer). You can take the survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/BCNARecon. The survey should take about 15-20 minutes. Your survey answers will be kept confidential. Only de-identified findings will be reported. We may include comments you make in a report, however, we will not identify you by name.
