Immunisation Awareness Month While August signals the last month of winter and we start looking forward to warmer weather, Immunisation Awareness Month reminds us that we still need to play our part in keeping safe. COVID-19 still poses a considerable risk to those who are immunocompromised, which includes those receiving active treatment for cancer. Speak to your doctor about whether you are due for a booster COVID-19 vaccination and consider wearing a high-quality and well-fitted mask to protect yourself and others. If you are receiving treatment for breast cancer, it's important to make a plan with your treating team should you test positive for COVID-19. This could include receiving antivirals if you are eligible, to help you recover. Everyone has a part to play in keeping those who are vulnerable safe, and in ensuring our health systems can continue to deliver care to those who need it. Check out the short video captured of the day https://spaces.hightail.com/receive/wYbO3ZsXF7 Did you know that BCNA advocates to reduce the cost of new breast cancer drugs? In the last three years we have supported over 15 submissions to campaign for these expensive breast cancer drugs to be put on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) so that they are more affordable In April we welcomed a decision by the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) to recommend the life prolonging breast cancer drug Enhertu (trastuzumab deruxtecan) for government subsidy on the PBS for HER2-low metastatic breast cancer. Lynparza (olaparib) has recently been listed on the PBS for HER-2 negative early breast cancer with a confirmed BRCA mutation. Last year, BCNA advocated strongly for Lynparza’s subsidy as an important treatment option to help reduce the risk of breast cancer coming back after treatment for people who are at especially high risk of recurrence. BCNA remains committed to advocating for Lynparza’s subsidy for metastatic breast cancer patients. If you need support navigating your breast cancer treatment, call our Helpline on 1800 500 258. BCNA Podcast: What you Don't Know Until You Do UNLIMITED - "No" is a sentence (Boundary setting) EP8 After a cancer diagnosis and treatment, you often discover you are not able to operate at the same level as you did pre-cancer - physically, cognitively, or emotionally. In episode 8 of Upfront – What You Don’t Know Until You Do: Unlimited, Clinical Psychologist Dr Charlotte Tottman explains the importance of boundary setting in self-care, particularly in relation to the challenges in continuing to care for loved ones while navigating a cancer experience, and the role of guilt in this. We learn about how to identify your limits and act on them, communicate to others and ourselves, and how to identify alternative helpful activities and prioritise them Listen Here Providing the consumer voice in breast cancer research BCNA again celebrates the important role trained Consumer Representatives (CRs) play in ensuring the consumer voice is included in breast cancer research. However, BCNA Director of Policy, Advocacy & Support Services, Vicki Durston, said that we are not yet able to celebrate because the drug remains out of reach to thousands who need it. For some a re-diagnosis is their biggest fear, which is why improved access to a key drug is considered an important step. Listen to the SBS Podcast Drug offers new hope for Australians with breast cancer | SBS News ABC News - Breast Cancer is becoming more common among under -50s and free screening is a secret Even though there's recognition women can get breast cancer when they're younger, it's still more common in older people. "More than 75 per cent of breast cancers occur in women aged 50 to 74," said Vicki Durston, a director at BCNA. "However, there is increasing evidence that screening younger women is beneficial, which is why screening programs in Australia and other countries are often from age 40." Another problem relates to that issue of breast density and age, which we touched on above. A dense breast is not related to size or feel but whether a breast is made up of mostly glandular or fibrous tissue (dense) or fatty tissue (less dense). "One of the challenges in screening younger women is breast density, which is more common in younger women," Ms Durston said. "Breast density can reduce the ability for a mammogram to pick up cancer but can also be a risk factor for breast cancer." The combination of age and density makes it less appealing to offer mass screening to women under the age of 40. Instead, those women are advised to undertake regular self-examinations Read Further Details Here The Beacon Magazine - available now! Read the open letter Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) Day - 3rd March 2024 Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) Day is a good time to acknowledge the significance of the drug Keytruda being added to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) late last year. In September 2023 Keytruda was added to the PBS for those with metastatic TNBC and in December it was added for those with early TNBC. Around 3000 Australians are diagnosed with TNBC each year, it is an aggressive and fast-growing form of breast cancer with fewer treatment options. Having this crucial drug on the PBS means more equitable access while also reducing the financial burden of a breast cancer diagnosis. We thank all the BCNA consumers who joined us in our successful advocacy to get this drug listed. Don't forgot here through the Online Network if have a private group Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) Lymphoedema Awareness Week Lymphoedema Awareness Week is a chance to celebrate work being done to develop an online tool for people with – or at risk of – lymphoedema as a result of a breast cancer diagnosis. The tool is being led by Flinders Health and Medical Research Institute’s (FHMRI) Cancer researcher Professor Bogda Koczwara AM in partnership with BCNA. Lymphoedema is the build-up of fluid in patients’ arms, resulting from damage or removal of lymph nodes during breast cancer treatment. The condition can develop soon after surgery or many years later. Prof. Koczwara says breast cancer survivors living in rural and remote locations are particularly at risk because of limited health support and will benefit most from an online self-management tool. Community News Season Greetings from Kirsten Pilatti (aka KP) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDtHJUUqWtI BCNA Celebrating 25 years We know that in another 25 years’ time, things may look very different. We anticipate further advances in breast cancer prevention, improved services to support those living with and beyond breast cancer, and new innovative ways that we access health information. So where do we see BCNA in 25 years’ time? ‘My granddaughters will be reaching an age where breast cancer may come into their lives. If breast cancer is still here, if it hasn't been eradicated or if we haven't found a way to prevent it from happening, then I would hope that BCNA is still a haven that can be relied upon.’ - Lyn Swinburne AO, BCNA Founder ‘I want to see everyone, not just those with the strongest voices, getting the best care. I also want BCNA to continue to help those diagnosed to find each other and to feel a sense of shared understanding through the connections we foster’. – Kirsten Pilatti, BCNA CEO You can read more BCNA's 25-year story CLICK HERE Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) - PROSPECT Study BCNA welcomes new Australian research which has found breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) prior to breast surgery, may be able to identify patients who can safely avoid radiotherapy. This could lead to less treatment, fewer side effects and save thousands of dollars in healthcare costs. The PROSPECT study – recently presented at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Conference and published in @the_lancet_ – also found participants who did not have radiotherapy, had substantially lower rates of fear of breast cancer recurrence and better quality of life compared to those who did. The researchers, led by Professor Bruce Mann, also found patients have a positive perception about tailored care, lower treatment burden and trust in clinicians. Read more about the study led by Professor Bruce Mann via the LINK Travelling and Airport Security Travelling through airport security with a breast prosthesis this holiday season? Here's what you need to know. With the busy travel period coming up, BCNA is still hearing that some people travelling through airport security wearing a breast prosthesis or compression bra are having distressing experiences. If you feel comfortable, let airport staff know you are wearing a breast prosthesis or compression bra before passing through security. It can also be helpful to carry a letter from your doctor. Airport staff may organise another imaging scan or a pat down. If this happens you must be treated respectfully. You can request to be screened in a private area and by an officer of the same gender. Your prosthesis or bra should never be touched or removed. BCNA is now working together with all major Australian airports to ensure their staff are well informed and trained to ensure all people with prostheses are treated respectfully.
