Should The Beacon change its name?

Thank you Marianne for posting the link to the first issue of the Beacon, very interesting to read the explanation of the name but I also noticed the painting by Melissa Jane Ades on the cover and it brought back a lot of memories of when I was working at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research during those years and Melissa held an exhibition of her works depicting her struggle with breast cancer to raise funds for research. Her works were beautiful, profound and deeply moving. I understand she has passed away now but hope her work can still be seen somewhere?
On a more relevant note: Thanks for the opportunity to have a say on the proposed change of name; like many others I believe the name of the newsletter needs to be inclusive of all who may be diagnosed with this disease and to reflect the important work BCNA does in supporting and advocating for the person affected by breast cancer. Refreshing the look of the magazine gives BCNA an incredible opportunity to take the lead in accurately portraying the diverse breast cancer landscape and be a point of real difference in the pink community. Cheers, Jane

Thanks for posting marianne. The statement:Importantly, we hope
that this newsletter will reflect the
symbolism of a beacon — enlightening
and showing the way.stands today just as well as it did then.
Also, the welcome page mentions only women. It took BCNA 20 years to degender the material produced for education and publicity purposes, and a change to Pink Lady for the newsletter seems to me to be a giant leap back 20 years.
If it ain't broke...

I did my survey and put in the comments section that as I am a newbie, I don't know of any other org. that includes men. As this is the BCN of Australia, that suggests it is inclusive of men. Even if male breast cancer is less prevalent, I am sure men would want to access the org. It's fantastic! Maybe later down the track there will be more male specific info in the pipeline. Most people in the online forum just want to connect and I think that the Sisters in there who have been around the block a few times are very good at embracing newbies and would extend a warm welcome to Brothers! So I think The Beacon is a good name, a guiding light.6

Voting closes this evening at 11:45pm.
Two male BCNA members have presented their case to retain the newsletter title as Beacon HERE.

I’ve also voted to keep Beacon. Well said @traveltext - men’s breast cancer awareness is finally getting out there. All that hard work would be lost in having such a gender specific name as Pink Lady. We all need a guiding light and get so much of it from the support here. Beacon is perfect.2

BCNA, since you've had the survey result for a couple of days, how about posting it to members?

Hi @traveltext, we will publish the results as soon as possible but we have to go though the comments in the 'other' section first and this will take a little time. We're planning to publish the results next week.4
