THERMAL DISCOMFORT
Hello
First time on line, so hello to everyone.
I've had breast cancer diagnosed over last Christmas, had lumpectomy with removal of four lymp nodes, I was lucky Stage two, just completed radiation treatment. Half way through I became really hot. I would wipe the sweat of my forehead.
I'm experiencing extreme thermal discomfort, it's like I'm standing next to a bonfire with searing heat oozing out of my body equally throughout the body, then a couple of minutes later I'm cold. Like sunstroke, when the fan blows over you. So I'm not sleeping as the bedsheet is too cold then I put the blanket over me then have to remove it.
The experts say it is not to do with the radiation. I don't believe it, has anyone else experienced this and will it go away and what can I do?
Thankyou...

- iserbrownMemberYour dizziness could be something unrelated - do you have thyroid problems - worth having a full blood test with GP. You need to let your Onc know of your occupation and if your treatment plan is compatible - my Onc had said if you are planning a long haul flight somewhere let me know!
- MyjourneyMemberYes thanks so much, yes I've been putting that in place to find an exercise physiologist as I need to do weight bearing low impact exercises due to my Ostopenia (how did I get that), I need hormones, hope I'm going to cope.
Last night (please forgive me feel like I'm whinging or a hypochondriac), I stood up from a sitting position and my left knee made a sound like it tore and it was sore. But I could walk and sit with no pain. I'm sure it is the lack of hormones.
Last Thursday (I've written this somewhere before), I had a dizzy attack where I couldn't walk straight, dizzy, etc...Friday I had to see my breast surgeon for the first time and I had to drive as I am on my own. With my experience of dizziness you have to push your body uncomfortable however it should be safe lol, to get the brain retrained to walk. I've managed to shake it off but it leaves you with a heavy head and sinus, but that's better than the dizziness. Three years ago I had a severe vertigo attack room spinning around for ten days straight in Hong Kong. Had three months off work for that, I might be going to work next Monday. I'm Cabin Crew for an international airline, nearly been off work 5 months now. No ground duties available, no short trips, straight into longhaul flying, I'm pretty tough but just have aches and pains etc. Think I have to bite the bullet, suck it up and go to work.
Thanks to all you beautiful loving caring people here, sometimes we are cranky lol, but we are still beautiful.....they say a problem shared is a problem halved. Xxx - iserbrownMemberYou sound like you need to go and see an exercise therapist that will help you with return to work fitness. When you do return will it be on lighter duties or full time or part time? You need to have a plan in place that will suit
- MyjourneyMemberJust so you know, I was lucky enough not to have chemo, but half way through radiation the hot flushes developed full blazing.....
all these ideas to cope with put feet in water is all good at home, but when we are trying to get back to work, which I am, aaaagh. - iserbrownMemberHi Nadi - cranky pants on and off help us cope! I only get beads of sweat on the forehead and the feet do get hot but I was told to put them in water to cool down! It all helps, you know the song when you're trying to sleep, you put one leg in you put one leg out and you shake it all about! It's a so and so but we've got to make light of it otherwise it's always cranky pants, which doesn't help our demeanour!
Take care xx - NadiMemberThere are cooling gel packs that go around the neck and shoulders as well as stylish cooling scarves available on Amazon.com. What really cheeses me off is that here I am at 5.30 am after yet another night of very little sleep thanks to the hot flushes. They seemed to be really good for two months and I thought "ok, I can get on with my life now," and then BAM!! for the past 6 weeks I've been hit with a hot flush every 40 minutes again. Bloody well sick of this. Sometimes makes me wish I never had chemo. ok i will take my cranky pants off now.
- MyjourneyMemberWhen I did the look good feel better? Course they put a cold compress around my neck it actually was good. I wonder if I can buy something like this, that you can't see too much so I can wear at work under my shirt.
- Brenda5MemberYep all that including the odd neck spasms and I do always need to be careful in case of not so much dizzy but vague and unsteady. I carry a wet t-towel in a plastic bag in my bag and find that's the quickest way to reverse the flush is to put it around your neck and daub your face. It can end up being quite debilitating so make sure you get enough rest to cope.
- MyjourneyMemberYeah I feel I might be a bit naive or something, but I pushed hard asked lots of questions and saw lots of people, o.t., dietician, Physio, social worker, nurses, I told them I was boiling hot and described my symptoms but they just say it's not from the radiation. It began half way through radiation. But no other explanation.
I started menopause 5 years ago, and have been on bioidentical hormones for three years. Made me feel great. Of course have had to stop them cold and have the aching legs joints, taking Panadol Osteo has taken the edge off the pain but I'm boiling hot roasting to chilled every ten minutes or so. Can't sleep hot cold blanket on blanket off...
This Thursday I experienced an intense dizzy attack, went on Sunday but left me with a tight exploding head and stiff neck....I guess it is something to do with my hormones. But I'm scared as I had a severe vertigo attack three years ago which took time to get over. Fingers crossed its nothing as I have to get back to work. Been off work coming up 5 months.
Thanks for your support. - HITMemberHi
I started menopause before treatment - 13yrs ago - and am still continuing. At the beginning they sounded like yours, starting from the core and radiating out - all over, and bad. I could sit in my pool in winter at night!!! Now still get them off and on, but they have got milder and sometimes just parts of body (head fairly often). They come and go, ya think your finished and they come back. I find when I get outbreaks of black hairs on my chin I know I'll get a few hot flushes. Go figure, hormones are wierd. Coping ... At night I get up and cool down when they are bad. Gives the bed a chance to cool and if I throw off the rugs and go to sleep I used to wake up freezing and knees aching. My daughter gave me an essential oil spray . Loved it, had oil of geranium init amongst others. Might of been mind over matter, but it helped to relax, and it helped me. Otherwise don't stress, they will go away sometime in the future, change clothes/jamas if sweating a lot. You get so cold cause your a natural evap conditioner - that sweat has got to dry. Gel inserts for pillows/beds seem to get a good response for some. Why didn't "the experts" look into it more for you, I'd like to know. Could of saved a bit of stress.
