Pain 2 years after Treatment - Possible damage from Radiotheapy

Diagnosed in 2015. Lumpectomy, chemo and radiotherapy.  In about March 2016, I developed pain under the affected breast (upper abdomen / lower ribs), which was more painful in a sitting position.  Bra's hurt and as you would all know, any pain is now a worry.  CT scans and X-rays came back clear, I was then referred to a gastrointeroligist and began treatment for oesphagitis.  I first I thought this was the answer, but the pain remained.  My oncologist suspected damage from radiotherapy and my GP put me on lyrics (nerve pain).  Still no relief (just horrible side effects from Lyrica).  My surgeon said to get off Lyrica and try acupuncture.  After researching more I found something called Radiation fibrosis syndrome.  See link https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4056465/

I can't be the only person with this kind of pain.  Any advice or treatment options would be great.  Looking forward to hearing from this group x

  • Its not only after lumpectomy and I didn't even have radiation and I get swift omfg pain across my chest for no good reason either. It is a mystery.
  • @Glemmis that's great! Mine is through income protection and has helped more than anything. Hopefully it all helps xx
  • @melclarity, I think I am seeing an exercise physiologist my GP referred me to on one of those care plans & then a physiotherapist for lymphodema, such fun x
  • Im 5 years post and still get that pain post radiation somedays worse than others . Radio onco says yes thats common complsint. Xx
  • @Glemmis Yeah they dont tell you everything do they?? I have more trouble from treatment than I do from BC hahaha!!! crazy hey? An exercise physiologist is fantastic and they know how all the muscles work its amazing!!! and how to stretch, I really have found it has helped heaps! x
  • That's interesting Melinda, I had a lot of cramping/burning sensation across my chest after 2nd AC & oncologist said, after examine me, I had been exercising too much but never told me it could be chemo related. I still have it after finishing chemo intermittently & am now seeing a physio for it. They expect everyone to fit in the box of symptoms they tell you about, so frustrating!
  • Hi Jane,

I had radiotherapy back in 2011 so had a long time of getting used to all that came from that. So I know exactly the pain you are talking about under the breast and I get it like across the ribs. My breast became very hard and with another major lumpectomy in 2015 the breast was just sore all the time 'useless in the end' BUT This is what I realised soon after the symptoms I used to get is actual cramping as my pain was never constant but would appear and disappear always bizarre but so painful!! I am wondering as you said youve had it all investigated and I am not surprised they didnt find anything to be honest as there are alot of residual side effects from Radiation. I also have severe burn scarring in my armpit and the left side of the breast. I honestly have never worried too much about it, as for me I know that is what my pain is. After Chemo in 2015 it further compounded it as Chemo shrinks the sheath over your muscles causing cramping throughout the body something I suffer with all the time. A good Exercise Physiologist has been fantastic and has been teaching me stretching techniques which help ALOT!!! Hope you get to the bottom of it and wonder if this resonates for you?
    Hugs Melinda xo
  • Hi Jane, just read your post.  I finished chemo/Radiothreaphy last July.  About August I had pain opposite side to lumpectomy, which was on the left breast. It was upper abdomen/lower ribs. It was extremely sore to touch, uncomfortable to sit & not so bad walking. After many tests and different medications my GP put me on buscopan as she, as well as a specialist, believed my stomach was going into a spasm. I'm almost scared saying this but for the last four days the discomfort has eased. The pain/ discomfort was like when you are pregnant and the bubs foot is stuck in your rib cage.
Dont know if this information is helpful, hope so.
    Anne-Marie. X
  • Is it possible it is scar tissue? That can tighten and pull on things. My Mum developed a bowel obstruction some 20 years after abdo surgery from it. My sister had horrid back pain and bladder issues that improved after the adhesions from old surgery were resected. Just a thought. Worth a discussion. Kath x
  • Hi Jane,

I have also had pain in side of breast also, more to touch than constant pain, my surgeon said that it was from radiotherapy. I have had all mammograms and ultrasounds any nothing has ever been found.

Hoping you are able to get some relief.

    Regards

    Michelle
