hair loss

Hi all,Some advice please. I start chemo on 10/2/12. I intended on having a cropping with a few friends and of course champaign just before, my hairdresser will come over to my home.

I was chatting to someone at nippers today and she said not to jump the gun because I may not lose my hair. I dont know how she knows this. I will be having EC and then Paclitaxel and herceptin with some rads thrown in for good measure.

In hair loss a given? I thaught it was.

  • I had FEC followed by Taxotere and in order to feel I had some control over everything I had my head shaved before I started chemo.

I never had the itchy scalp as my hair fell out and it didn't grow back curly as is often reported.

This also allowed me to select a wig while I was still feeling well, although I discovered that I had a very well shaped head and like Samantha often just wore my bald head. Hated hats and other "disguising" headgear.

I also had radiation to the affected breast and chest wall. My hair was starting to grow back then and has continued growing - I had chemo first, then mastectomy and finally radiation. Unless you are having whole brain radiation to your head, this should not affect your hair regrowth.

  • It is worth asking your medical oncologist re your "potion".  I had Docetaxel (Taxetare) and Cycla....mide.  These make you totally lose your hair.  I am a bit suspicious of Paciltaxel  - seems like it might be in the same family as Taxetare.  I had long hair and lost my hair in a gradual process.  I had radiation before chemo so cut my hair to chin length then a bit higher when radiation was finished then went to number 4 but when the hair started falling out my husband shaved it off.  When the chemo was finished and the hair started growing back, my husband shaved the first "crop" off as well as it was just "bum fluff" and would have been full of chemicals.
