Feeling before hairloss?

I had my first chemo session two weeks ago with the cold cap. The cold cap was fine throughout my session. However, I’m not sure if it will or won’t be successful for me at this time.
My head has a sore spot over an area that feels kind of like a bruise as if I’ve bumped it. I think any hair loss also occurs about 2 or 3 weeks after chemo?
Is this the type of pain/discomfort that is usually felt before your hair falls out?
  • Thanks everyone. The sore feeling is a bit less today. I guess it’s a wait n see game. I’ll continue with the cold cap unless I lose too much hair to warrant it.
I’m hoping that round two of chemo will go smoothly this time & not land me back in hospital. I seem to be high maintenance for all the wrong reasons lol.
  • Same as others @Scaredycat  I cut mine really super short before first chemo but I also got that weird feeling of the rest of my hair being sore and brittle then 2nd week after chemo it all just dropped out.  After treatment had finished was when my eye brows and lashes fell out. For some reason they go last.  Good luck with the cold cap though and hope it works.
  • I got my long hair cut short for a start before any chemo. I started to get used to it as chemo started. Then I went for a walk on the beach a couple of weeks after the first dose and it was very windy. When I got back a lot of my hair had blown away so I got a crew cut. Not all my hair fell out but most of it did. At home I walked around au natural but when I went out I wore a baseball cap. It was especially good around the freezer section in the supermarket as my head really felt the cold.
  • Hey @Scaredycat.

I had great success with the cap.  However, about 12 days after chemo one I was walking through the shops and could literally feel the air con going through my hair.  My scalp was hyper sensitive, putting a hat on hurt and yes it does feel like sore hair, which is quite an odd feeling. I had that bruised head feeling as well.

The super sensitivity and soreness lasted for about the first four treatments and then backed off a bit.  The shedding started at about three weeks and continued throughout the AC treatment.  It slowed down a lot on taxol.
Fine hair sometimes works better as the cap can get to your scalp easier than if you have really thick or curly hair.
Using the cap does add a bit more stress to the whole thing.  You are so invested in this thing working that every piece of hair that falls you panic a bit.  Makes for a long six months, although I got a lot more relaxed about the whole thing after treatment 4 and I still had a full head of hair.

    Best of luck lovely.  xoxox
  • I had the cold cap for the first two chemo sessions but by the middle week of the second cycle it was clear it wasn't working well enough to persist. The house was a mess with hair everywhere and the amount that was coming away in the shower was upsetting. So I went to a hipster barber and got it all shaved off (from a bob). Felt much better, no tears. My scalp continued to be sore for several more weeks but slowly improved. I still have scalp tenderness, especially in the areas that were sorest. Chemo, the gift that keeps on giving...
  • Thanks K, did you shave your hair at that point? I’ve got a strong feeling that my hair will start falling out. It’s sore on the top but to one side ..... and it’s only day eleven since the chemo ..... lol. I definitely haven’t hit/bumped my head recently.
  • I had TC chemo and had a very sore scalp before my hair started falling out on Day 14. Tried the cold cap as well - didn't work well enough for me to persist. Plus my hair was all dead & manky & brittle feeling. Totally normal as far as I'm aware. K xox
  • Thank you. I wasn’t confident of the cold cap working as I have very fine almost child like hair. I also landed in ED twice after the chemo ..... I was admitted the first time for a cellulitis infection & overnight the second time as my arm then developed cellulitis as well as blood clots in the vein. I guess two types of antibiotics on top of the chemo wouldn’t be doing my hair any favours 🙄.
The wigs do look like fun though & the hats/beanies quick, easy & comfy looking.
  • About day 17 is normal after chemo...like AC. It starts as sore hair...like its been pulled up really really tight in a ponytail  (with hairclips poking in) then let down. Feels good albeit painful to rub it.
You msy find you'll start shedding hair soon. Hopefully not all of it.
