swollen breast weeks after radation treatment

Hi to all, I finished radiation treatment abou 6 weeks ago and in the past few weeks my underarm where lymphnodes were removed has become really sore. I am really trying to stretch and keep it moving. Also the treated breast is now swollen and really feels like pulled muscles. Just wonderin . has anyone else had this sort of experience? cheers Cathy

  • Hey Cath, I haven't started radiation yet but I did get an infection inside behind my scar that was hot and very sore and had to have it drained as it was a seroma? And antibiotics they also said this can be common after/during radiation . I have only just managed a 5km run and bike on the roadie and not looking forward to having to stop that or get back to the old days of radiation is a shit.

  • Hi wow chording is something I had not even heard of. Thank you all for your replies. I did a10km run this morning and now  with good support bra....I am normally an A cup but one side is AnA and the others is a C at the moment... ... Oh golly ... Under is so sore and breast feels like hot stabbing.... Dam this I just want to get back to normal lifeand do what what I wad doing before I hit this pot hole.....lol going to Google chording now.Thank you everyone.

  • Hi. I was told by my physio that if you get cording it can be a nuisance for ever so really important to keep up with stretches. Everything felt tighter after radiotherapy. The worst effects seemed to happen after finishing radiotherapy!

  • Hi, I am 3 months out from radiation and that stiffness in my upper arm began at least 2 months ago, so 1 month roughly after radiation. It is actually getting worse and really limiting movement in my left are especially backwards or behind my head etc. I am actually wondering if it is chording which i found I had about 5 days ago. I thought chording was all behind me so rather confused. Andi

  • Yes, am on Tamoxifen and Herceptin, Perjata and Xgeva (have secondary in vertebrae).  I was wondering if it was the Herceptin making me feel stiff but it's a bit coincidental to be just on the same side.  I haven't had any discharge - that's a bit of a worry I imagine.  Sounds strange, but the radiation has affected me more both during and after than the chemo - not sure if its because we hear so much about chemo and lead to believe that radiation is a walk in the park compared. Whatever it is, I am finding it very inconvenient and annoying!  LOL

  • Hi Cathy, I'm waiting for a date to start my radiation. I hadn't heard of these side effects, something to look forward to. Not. Paula XXX
  • Hi Kari, I am exactly the same witht the stiffness and pain. Also getting discharge from that breast. I am very tender too. I thought it might have been that I didnt stretch enough but it really feels like I am straining something too. I had not probs afte the surgery either but now its different. Thanks for your reply. Its nice to know there is someone else going through similar..... but I thought I had finiished with it all. Can I ask are you taking tramoxofin?

  • Hi Cathy

I am about the same time from finishing radiation and have noticed this last week that the breast is tender, heavy and under my arm quite tender as well. That arm also gets quite stiff (especially overnight) and while I ddin't have any issues following lymphnode removal, now to stretch my arm fully above my head feels like I am straining something.  I thought it might be that I had so much going on that I haven't been as diligent as I should with moisturising and massage.  I am certainly keeping watch and intend to get some advice if it gets worse or stays the same for an extended period.
