Mouth ulcers

First bout of chemo on Friday and I have a couple of mouth ulcers around my teeth already. :-( I've been really diligent in cleaning with a soft brush after eating and I've been doing the salt water rinse all the time as well. Should I be doing more? Any tips would be appreciated. Many thanks Linda. X
  • Thanks Paula I will try the iced water during chemo as well! Worth a go. :-) I will also look for an alcohol free mouthwash I think as my breath NEVER seems fresh these days. Eeeew. That good old metallic taste makes me feel like I've been drinking bore water from a 50 year old well. Linda X
  • My friend who had been through chemo before me gave me a tip that a nurse gave her. Sip ice cold water the whole way through the chemo infusion. I used to freeze half filled water bottles and fill them with water on the day. Sipped all during the procedure and never had a mouth ulcer. Worth a try. She also told me no hot drinks, but could never resist the tea trolley but used to,let it cool a bit before sipping it. Good luck Paula :)
  • I had a few during chemo. Not nice!! Biotene was what I used too. And salt water rinses. Good luck!...this too will pass. XXX

  • Hi Linda, I used Listerine alcohol free mouthwash all the way through chemo (and still do). I haven't had any mouth ulcers. Hopefully yours will clear up soon. Cheryle :)

  • After seeing my dentist after having two fillings break while on chemo, she gave me Colgate Dry Mouth Wash to try and it seems to work. I still use it after the chemo for a good breath freshener, alcohol free. I also used warm water and salt but added 1/4 teaspoon bicarb soda to it as well. My hospital gave me some complimentary mouth wash solution satchels which contained sodium bicarbonate which gave me the idea. I cleaned my teeth after every meal and flossed once a day but did this carefully so as not to cause any bleeding. I only got a mouth sore once at the beginning of chemo and Mich is right. It only lasted for a day or two. I hope you don't have ongoing problems with this. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. Love Janey xxx
