Mouth ulcers due to chemo

I need help. I have been receiving the chemo Caelyx for two months now. I am getting really bad mouth ulcers. I use Biotene mouthwash, gargle with salt & water and use SM33 on the ulcer. But my mouth is still very sore. I could hardly eat anything today. Any treatments that have worked for you?
  • Hi @angg66. How are you getting on? Has your mouth improved? Hope so. K xox
  • I had very bad mouth ulcers for the last six weeks of chemo and was absolutely miserable with them. My oncologist prescribed liquid morphine as they were also down my throat and on the roof of my mouth. Nothing really worked for me I have to say but a mouth wash called Peter Mac which the nurses at the Oncology unit gave me was very good.  I couldn’t buy it here in Brisbane but ordered it on line from a pharmacy in Melbourne.
My ulcers eventually disappeared 3 weeks after finishing chemo.
i hope you get some relief over the weekend.
  • I used the Oral 7 toothpaste all the way through chemo, and did salt rinses three or four times a day. I never had mouth ulcers but I got oral thrush repeatedly. It was the drops from the chemist that got rid of it. I found two flavours, cherry and vanilla. Neither were awesome but I marginally preferred the cherry! Good luck, hope it clears up soon. K xox
  • That's good @angg66, i hope you get some relief.
  • Thanks for the suggestions. I went & saw my oncology nurse today. It looks like I have oral thrush & because my immune system is down due to the chemo, my body is finding it hard to heal itself. So after the nurse consulted with my oncologist, they gave me some antifungal lozenges, Oral 7 toothpaste and mouth wash & lots of other things to try over the weekend. Hopefully I can get this under control. I meet with the oncologist next Tuesday too.
  • @angg66, i was told kenalog by the nurses through  treatment. I never needed it but others have said it's really good. You can buy it over the counter at your local chemist. It comes in a tube. Hope this helps.
  • Hi @angg66 I had really bad ulcers with chemo last year.  A pharmacist recommended gelclair and that helped.  It comes in 15 ml sachets which are mixed with water and rinsed around the mouth.  It costs a bit more than many gels or creams; one nurse suggested using a cotton bud to dab the gelclair on ulcer spots.  I hope you find
  • Hi @angg66 I’m sorry to hear about your mouth ulcers with the Caelyx. It sounds like you are doing well with your oral hygiene but if you have painful mouth ulcers that are stopping you from eating, I suggest you contact your oncologist or chemotherapy team tomorrow to let them know. They may suggest stronger numbing gel or even adjust your dose of medication. Do you have any pain killers - panadol or panadeine? Do try and keep up the fluids. Take care, Rosie
