Furry mouth

Well Chemo 5 has not been quite as easy as the others. The main issue is my mouth, no ulcers just white coating all over and now I have no taste at all which is of course affecting my interest and ability to eat. I just made a lovely breakfast but no interest in consuming it. Any suggestions? I will ring and get an appointment with my GP if I can today and Plan B will be the oncologist but just wondered if anyone had words of wisdom.
  • Soda water help bubble all the dead stuff off your tongue--gargle, rinse and repeat. If you are still able to tolerate toothpaste, you can rinse with soda water after brushing, but be warned, it can make fizzy stuff come out your nose. Mxx
  • Many thanks for such quick response. I'll try the soft brush on my tongue, doing the salty water thing and yes agree eggs seem to be the only thing that tastes normal. I'll get some bananas today. I can do to lose some of weight put on because of steroids. As always I am most grateful or your support. Regards
  • I lost my taste buds on Taxol. They came back soon after my last treatment, which is the good news. Conventional wisdom is to try stronger tasting or spicy food, but that didn’t work at all for me. The only things that tasted relatively normal were eggs (no
idea why!) and uncooked food including avocado, banana and salad (lettuce, tomato even cucumber). It may be trial and error until you find what you can actually enjoy. Otherwise eat as well and as regularly as you can - it’s boring but it’s great if you want to lose a few kilos! It could be worse - a friend, on the same treatment years before, experienced everything tasting burnt. Now that’s really unpleasant. Best wishes.
  • Rinse with salty water is good. If you can stand it, pineapple juice is good too. Soft brush your tongue as well. It will heal quick so no dramas. Drink lots of water and keep hydrated. It doesn't matter if you dont eat for a day or two but drinking pear juice will keep your colon active. Add a bit of ginger ale to settle the stomach.
