Tamoxifen mouth problems

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced areas of inflamation, possibly an abscess, in the mouth as a side effect of tamoxifen. I've been taking it around 2 1/2 wks now and the inflamation on the upper rear palate started a few days after tamoxifen. At first I thought it might be my impacted wisdom tooth playing up, but the tooth and gum are fine. It can get quite painful, especially when I swallow. My gp was unsure so put me on a course of antibiotics and took some bloods. Not sure if it's a side effect or coincidence.

  • Hi Molly, I was on Tamoxifen for 4 yrs and never experienced mouth problems as you describe.I don't think it's a side effect of that drug. You sound run down or maybe not quite over chemo effects?
  • Thanks Brenda, I do think my body has a much lower resilience than before chemo too. I also had an infected toe a few weeks back for no known reason.
  • I haven't really had mouth ulcers from Tamoxifen however my doctor said I have low resistance to anything and am drug sensitive as well. Probably a wise precaution to have some antibiotics for you.
I do get ulcers of my own making like chewing on a cheek with worry. Cracked a tooth grinding them with worry. I have to keep reminding myself don't grind my teeth!
  • Hi Molly, you poor thing. That sounds really uncomfortable but does not sound like a side effect of tamoxifen. Have you recently finished chemotherapy? It's good that you have followed up with your GP. I hope the antibiotics kick in quickly and you start feeling better
