Breast oedema

Saw for breast care nurse today as I've still got a lot of swelling and pain in my breast, which I thought was the seroma. But she says I've also got oedema of the whole skin of the breast too.
She taught me the correct massage technique to manual drain my lymph nodes- hurt like hell. Wants me to do it 3 times a day for 2 wks then go back for reassessment and if not working then to lymphedema specialist for ultrasound technique.
I came home and taught the massage to my husband..   must admit he enjoyed it lol!
  • @Sister So sorry about the aching everything. K xox
  • I've found exfoliation gloves in the shower or bath to be the best way of moving mine around. My arm has nearly returned to normal and the bubble around my foob does respond but reforms afterward. Really gentle strokes so the skin tingles, no scratching or rubbing at the skin like you would normally do if you were trying exfoliate.

I've got limited skin sensation in my left upper quadrant ( unless it's burning like a bastard in the middle of the night) but I can feel the glove and it seems to work better at moving the fluid than my bare hand. Some people tell me the nightly bath is a bad idea, but I've dropped the temp from my prefered heat and it's the only thing that gives me relief from the otherwise relentless aching in my legs, ankles and feet.
  • As @primek said, use a very light touch.  A masseur told me the lymph nodes need to be gently drained - making sure the lower end of the catchment is ''emptied'' first.  Ask your BC nurse where the fluid needs to go and follow that.  The touch should be so light it feels like a butterfly coming and going, no heavy movements.  You will get relief.  Anne
  • @sister it hurts too much to enjoy (on the left breast anyway)
