Headache

Hello to all,

This is my first post and I desperately need help. Monday I had my first round of chemo consisting of Docetaxel and Cyclophosphamide.  Day 3 and 4 have been rather tough on me and now I have a very itchy, burning and blistering sores on my scalp. Please can anyone help me with any remedy that worked for them. It is driving me crazy.

Cheers Sharon xo

  • I personally had no infections as such on AC but had to deal with a massove candida / trush.all.over my body both internally and externally that persisted for 5 weeks post chemo...

I wore a face mask every time I went out as did hubby when on public transport or shops and that helped. Hubby also.had a flu shot to make sure he was less likely to catch any bugs...

I think everyone has some.sort of issue to deal with due to.weakened immune system but need not be a massive infection as such

  • I was.on AC Chemo and by the end of 1st week of my 1st chemo my scal was driving me insane. It was itchy and scaly and any touch of the hair caused immense pain. Falling asleep was not possible as hair against the pillow meant excrutiating pain.

I had my head shaved and can honestly say it was the best thing ever. Pain stopped and never came back. No itch at all... I then bough an electric razor and made sure to shave my head completely couple of days post each round and it worked like a charm...

    All the best

  • Thank you everyone for your post, they have been very helpful. Cheers xo

  • Hi im not the orginal person that asked for help but thank you very much as im starting my first treatment on these two drugs next week and your advice has helped me and now i can get some DermaVeen products before my scalp itches or i loose hair. I was told i would pretty much loose my hair on these two drugs but id like to know did you get very sick onthese at all as im very scared of gettin an infection as i watched my sister die from side effects of chemo 25 years ago. totally different type of cancer she had Leukemia and different type of chemo but nethertheless im still worried of infection?? So my question is did you get sick from chemo or catch cold or infections at all?

  • Hi Sharon,

I had a different regime to what you are having, I had 4 rounds of FEC 3 weeks apart and then 8 rounds of Taxol weekly. It does sound to be your hair follicles, I remember that itch sooooo well and it was the beginning of my hair falling out. Within a week I just started shedding, so buzzed it all off. I'd call your Oncology nurse and just run it by her, or the ward as you can generally get a nurse there and just ask. My itch went away once I started to lose most of it.

All the best, sorry couldnt help much more.

  • Hello Sharon,

    Welcome to BCNA!

I've just finished my fourth on the same concoction.

It's just your follicles reacting to the Docetaxel, and if your experience plays out in a similar way to mine it's the beginning of your hair thinning (My nurses told me that people lose all their hair on this drug, but mine only ever reduced in volume by about 60%).

Blistering can be caused by chemicals in regular shampoos, but if you're already using something perfume-free and hypo allergenic, book in to see a nurse or oncologist. As your rounds compound your body will start struggling to heal itself and you'll become prone to infection so get on top of treating them right now.

I'm using DermaVeen products just as standard now. Nothing harmful in them, cheap, and leave you feeling clean.

My itching and inflammation started around Day 5 and didn't stop until I shaved back my hair and was able to properly wash and moisturise my scalp 2-3 times a day. I hit the shave exactly 2 weeks after first round. It does still itch (likely because I didn't lose all my hair and some are still reacting) but nowhere near at the severity of in those first two weeks.

I hope this has been useful and comforting in some way,

    xo Rebecca

  • Hi Sharon, sorry I can't help much.  I think it would be best to see your GP and in the meantime even the chemist.  Or your breast care nurse.

Hope it heals quickly and all goes well for you.

I'm sure one of the lovely ladies on here will be able to offer more help.

    Anne-Marie ??

  • Hi Sharon, sorry I cant help but that is exactly what im having and my first time starts on Tuesday so im very interested hearing any replys also. I hope you get some answers and some relief. I have been told side effects also but i havent heard of those symptoms either so like yourself i would be worried to. I was expecting and heard first 4 days is when you have the most chemo in your system until you flush it all out then 10 days later hair loss and 6 days of under the weather but once again everyone is different. Waiting on your replys also. meanwhile take care and all the best :)
