Cold cap with chemo to save hair!

I have the chance to wear a cold cap when I start chemo next month.  The nurse wets your hair, rubs conditioner in it and you put the cap on that has -20 degrees water running through it! Has any one tried it? They say you get quite cold and need a blanket . Be nice not to have to loose my hair, but sounds like torture!

  • Thanks everyone for your comments. I have decided to try it, what have I got to loose!
I have just had my second mastectomy in a matter of five weeks and they are giving me two weeks to get over it then chemo starts. So its going to be a hard slog but got to be done. They postponed my 1st chemo because of the second op. But its a bit easier this time as they didnt have to take out the lymph nodes  thank goodness. I'll let you know how I go with the cap. ☺💗
  • I had my second cold cap yesterday.  So far, quite bearable.  Yes, very cold up to the first 10 minutes then totally OK for the rest.   I have to have it on for 2 hours and am now used to it.    Have something warm to put over your shoulders and make use of the electric blanket.   Will keep you posted on my hair condition.   I have 12-16 weekly treatments all up.
  • A couple of the ladies at my hospital used it in 2019, one lady's hair looked lovely though she said it had thinned a little - I couldn't notice .
The other lady had a bald patch because the cap wasn't fitted properly but apart from that her hair looked great.
I tried it because it was offered but it was a bit claustrophobic for me.  I say give it a go!

I never get tired of seeing Kezmusc's beautiful hair!
  • I definitely agree with StarGirl, I had my treatment 7 years ago and it worked, I did loose some hair, but I looked the same, which made me happy. The new cold caps sound like they would work even better.
  • I would 100% recommend cold caps. I didn’t wet my hair or use conditioner. Just went on top of my hair as normal. But mine was 5 years ago and was literally just an ice cap that they changed multiple times during the session. I really don’t understand why everyone doesn’t do it. You keep your hair and no one even knows so life is totally normal.
  • @beaglemum and @kesmusc, thanks for your info , I'm  not so scared of it now and will give it a go!  And maybe now I wont go and have that pixie cut!  Just got to get through this second mastectomy in a few weeks , two weeks recovery and then it will be all go!
  • Absolutely worth trying if you are lucky enough to have the option.   It worked brilliantly for me.  You are best to do your home work first and not leave everything up to the nurses.  Some of them are very good with the cold cap and some not so much.  Most nurses leave it up to you to do the wetting down and conditioner. The fit against your scalp is the make or break of it.
I did not find it anywhere near as torturous as you read about.  It's not fun and the first time is a bit of a shock to the system but after that you know  what to expect.  If you would like anymore info just pm me.  I have a walk through of hints and tips.

    All the best lovely  xoxoxo
    Last day of chemo.

  • Hi @Hils  I am using the cold cap at the moment - yes it is a bit cold to start with but only for a short time  (maybe 10 mins) - you then get used to it - a bit like a dull headache and you get to be wrapped in a nice warm blanket and given meds to relax you during the process - so not too torturous.
I did find that I have still have had some hair loss - but was warned that it doesn't guarantee no hair loss.  It was around 2-3 weeks in from my first session - had what felt like lots of hair come out - but was a bit of thinning really - still distressed me..  Haven't had too much loss since then so seems to be doing the trick - My hair is really short and thin anyway however I have still have worn scarves/headwear mainly as  the colour loss stands out more now it is that bit thinner and I have half purple half grey hair at the moment  (not a good look) -  but all round I would recommend it - at my last session the lovely nurse applying the conditioner showed me there was no hairs coming out at all so thats a big positive.
Give it a go, if you find it too much you can always say you don't want to continue with it if you find it too uncomfortable.

Best of luck with your chemo next month. x
