Chemo Curls my new hair

Hi ladies

I wanted to share with you my before and after photos of my new post chemo hair!.  Not that I am ungrateful for new hair, but gosh not sure how I am going to style this new do when the curls gets longer because my hair used to be straight.

So this is what I looked like BEFORE chemo...

And this is my AFTER, 5 months post chemo ( I was completely bald).

It is much thicker and the curls are ridiculously tight :)  Will be interesting to see if it stays this curly.  Another friend of mine has had her chemo curls now for over 12 months!

Soooo bizarre! but, here's to having hair! and living!

  • Hi Ne!   Wow. I love the curls!

I have my first chemo tomorrow. I have always had really straight long fine red hair. I hated it straight as it never had any body, just hung limp. In my 20s I used to get it spiral permed so that I had long ringlets half way to my waist. Think Nicole Kidman in her early days. The perm back then would take over 6 hours to put in and cost $600. I have had it straight and long for the last 20 years but do miss those expensive curls.

I find it funny that my friends with curly hair spend a lot of time straightening it and then I and others with straight hair want curls.

Here's hoping that mine will grow back curly after chemo. I am a bit worried because I had Alopecia on about a quarter of my head immediately after the birth of my youngest son 16 yrs ago. And so while I have been through hair loss before and know a little of what to expect I am hoping that having this history doesn't mean that chemo will trigger permanent hair loss. My dermatologist told me that Alopecia frequently comes back. I've been lucky to dodge a recurrence to date. Fingers crossed all will be well.

    Take care

  • Howdy i too have thick curly tight ringlets finished treatment a year ago. I havent coloured it yet and curious as to what herbal colour brand you went with.

Love the curls but it is out of control especially in the humidity.

  • I hope they drop too even if just a little.  The in between period between short and long is going to look silly i guess but will have to stick it out.

  • Lol...it already feels like im growing an afro..haha...ut is sooo tight.  Just thought id mention too that ive put a herbal colour through it so not my natural colour although it is growing back darkish.

  • Hi Ne

i must say, I love the curls! It will be interesting if they stay that tight or drop a bit as your hair get longer. Mine grew back darker, thicker  with beautiful curls. I love it!

  • My hair pre chemo was similar to yours, not quite dead straight. Mine is now about half a cm long, 9 weeks post last dose

  • My daughter just asked if that was a photo of me lol.  Give it another few weeks and then when you get caught in the wind it frizzes and you look like you are trying to grow an afro.

Nice even colour and it's come back nice and thick so that is a plus. One of my friends went from dark brown to blonde post chemo. It's amazing what our bodies do. My mum's chemo curls took about 2 years to change from curls to waves. I wonder if your friends curls will drop over time.

  • Gee Ne thats awesome love the photos with the dogs go girl xxx
