Advice needed re 'day after AC chemo' and driving

Hi everyone,

I was hoping you could share some of your experiences / give me advice on something.

I am starting AC Monday (16th) and this first time at least they are keeping me overnight for observation as I suffer from multiple rather severe allergies.

I am trying to figure out if on the day after Chemo I am OK to drive myself home from.the hospital as we are trying to avoid hubby taking the day off since he has barely any left and want to save them for later on if I have complications or 'bad days' and need him arround.

When I asked the nurse who advised when I am.going to be booked in she suggested it is not a big deal and that many women do back to work the same day much less the day after.

Now I know some have had not so good experience with AC so just hoping guys can share some of your wisdom on this topic.

I am not that close to the hospotal but then do not anticipate more than an hours drive on the day and I can pick a 'non peak' period... Just really hate for him to take a day as he is about to run out of leave and with me about to go on upaid leave really want to avoid it if unecessary.

Also I had another question... if you have someone take / escort you to Chemo - can they stay with you while it Is being administered. Or do they wait elsewhere until it is done... Same motive here - he wants to take a day and go with me the day off but seeing I am being admitted overnight if he is just going to be in a waiting room someplace else planning to tell him to go to work Instead as if not arround During probably better off without him arround 'after' so I can rest and not worry about him going home in time (we have a diabetic pet that is on 12 hourly insulin injections so kind of a big deal when we get home feed the little furball tc...)

I know everyone is different and will have had different exlerience so no guarantee I will react the same way to the treatment as you ladies but it would still help letting me.know what you rhink and how you went seeing that for me ir Is all the 'the great unknown'...

  • Thank you Kath

I know he wants to be there but I just worry as he is very limited in terms of leave and used a lot during surgery time.plus his dad died 2 weeks ago (lived in Europe) so ended up using up even.more to attend the funeral...

I guess maybe I will have to have him there next week but will have to figure out the going home the next day bit so it works for everyone

  • Thank you - did not even consider I might need some.to keep an eye out on me 'during'...

Will have to rethink that one I guess

  • I really didn't feel safe to drive following AC chemo even 2 weeks on at times as I get quite dizzy at times. I know the 1st day not too bad but no way would I personally drive. My husband stays whilst I have my chemo and goes off and gets nice coffee etc for us both. Is there anyone else who can drive you back if needing to keep some days for hubby. It is really challenging on the whole family. I would think though he might like to be there. My husband really wanted to and changed all his work days to suit treatment, he was lucky enough to do it, even if half days. You have to do whats best for you both...but dont forget to ask him what he would prefer to do also. Kath x

  • Yes you most certainly can have someone with you while the chemo is being administered. Take along something to eat for that person as only the chemo patient got lunch when I was going. Clinics get busy and it is an very good idea to have your care person there to sound the alarm should a reaction start. I know when I had a reaction my brain never even remotely focussed on pushing that nurse button, I was too busy with the effects and hubby saved the day by running to the next row of chairs to find the nurse. You can if you want see if your breast nurse can sit with you? Mine came by for a chat once while I was having chemo.
