1st Chemo reaction

So started Chemo yesterday morning,  taken care of by a lovely nurse and a supportive friend and daughter.

Well I thought this was going to be a breeze after I was told I was given an anti nausea pill and steroids and more anti nausea stuff in the drip ..... apparently my body was not going to co-operate and rebelled - within a couple of hours the worst ever nausea and frightful dizziness kicked in and was not letting go even with the pills I was sent home with.

Eventually couldn't  take it anymore and got hold of my wonderful GP who has prescribed Stemetil over and above the other meds so here's hoping.

This happen to anyone else?

sending love to all you wonderful people wherever you are on this journey xxxxx

  • Yes I had bad nausea and a bad reaction to maxalon after my first cycle of FEC.   I know take Ativan at night for about a week and one dexamethasone in the morning  for a week.  Helps a lot.  They are strong and effective.  Ask your oncologist for strong effective medication.  Maxalon is not very strong.  You can't take the Ativan or dexamethasone all t he time, the Ativan is addictive.  But it helps a lot.  Best of luck. First chemo seems often to be the worst,

  • I still felt ill 3 days later and ended ip on nexium  (fir gastritis) and ondasatron for 7 days. This time I'm  trying stemitil and nexium but have ondasetron to fall back on if it doesn't work. I'm  really hoping it will be good. Kath

  • Hi Karen

i had my first chemo on a Thursday and by the Sunday I started vomiting and daihorrea. I just figured that was supposed to happen. After 4 days of sitting on the toilet with a bucket in my lap, I finally went to the hospital and was admitted for 5 days. It ended up that they up'd the dose of cortisone each treatment and I had ondansetron wafers. After the 2nd dose they change the carboplatin for cyclophosphomide as I was still really sick for 12 days.  The next treatment i still got sick but I was able to contain the really bad sickness to one to two days. Don't be afraid to go to the hospital. If it's really bad, don't just put up with it thinking that this is how it's meant to be. Let your onc know as they will be able to do things to make it a bit better for you. Hope you start to pick up soon. Take care. Karen xox

  • Oh yes! My first round was horrendous ... Within hours I was literally unable to move, extreme nausea, mega headache, heartburn... The next week was a write off.... I have just had my second and was terrified of what was to come, BUT thanks to me telling my team how bad the dude effects were first time, they armed me with more anti nausea pills, become fir the heartburn and an even stronger tablet for nausea Iv the first didn't cut it.... Luckily I didn't need the stronger one this time but I did use a higher dose of the regular anti nausea pills and some heartburn ones, BUT the fatigue and nausea didn't hit me this time until day four... The only thing that plagues me the most now is the fatigue, but it's better than feeling nauseated! Hopefully the next round will be kinder to both of us!  But please mention it to your chemo team including the nurse, they will work to make it more tolerable for you.... Best wishes fit the rest of your treatment....

  • Great advice I will keep a diary of my side effects to take to my appointments - thanks??

  • So sorry you had to miss your show for a stint in hospital  ?? hope you are doing better now....

The nausea seems to be easing so here's hoping ??

  • We all react so differently to everything we are given, but fortunately there are a heap of side effect treatment options. To help your Oncologist out; keep track of all of your side effects and symptoms, the duration and at what stage post chemo they occurred, if anything you tried worked or didn't and rank the severity no matter how minor or how severe. The more info you can give your Oncologist before the next round the more likely they will be able to stop a repeat of this lot of nausea. Hope they can make the next round easier. Jen x

  • Hi I hope you are feeling better. Chemo is not fun I ended up in hospital after my first one. I was so annoyed as I had tickets to a show and they wouldn't let me out of hospital as I was hooked up to a drip of anitibiotics. Take care of yourself and tell your team of all your side effects so maybe the next one will be easier
