Community highlights

Every week we have so much variety in the posts being shared on the online network.  These can include questions about treatments, updates on how things are going, and celebrating milestones. Here are some good conversations you might have missed:

BCNA news and events

BCNA's next information forum will be Tuesday, 30 May in Albury, NSW. There will be two separate forums held on the day: one on early breast cancer and one on metastatic breast cancer. Refreshments and a light lunch will be served. For more information and to register, click here

I'm going to be there so be sure to say hello if you're coming too.

BCNA will host a breast reconstruction information session in Melbourne. This a two-hour information session on Tuesday, 13 June from 6pm-8pm. You will hear presentations from a breast surgeon and a breast reconstructive plastic surgeon on issues relating to breast reconstruction including:
  • The aim of breast reconstruction
  • Types of reconstruction, and pros and cons of each
  • Nipple reconstruction
  • Options for surgery to the other breast
  • New techniques in reconstruction
Speakers:
  • Professor Bruce Mann, Breast Surgeon
  • Dr Simon Overstall, Plastic Surgeon
There will be an opportunity for questions after the presentations. For more information and to register, click here.

BCNA has been awarded one of two headline charity partner positions for the 2017 Blackmores Sydney Running Festival. Held on Sunday 17 September 2017, the event gives people the opportunity to run or walk across the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge to support Australians affected by breast cancer. Participants can choose from either a 3.5km family fun run, the 10km course, or the half or full marathon. For more information, to register, and fundraise in support of BCNA, click here. Or join @Cate64's team!

The Pink Bun campaign is BCNA's biggest fundraiser of the year. Bakers Delight generously donates 100% of the sale of Pink Buns. This money goes towards the creation of our resources, such as the My Journey Kit, My Care Kit, and Hope and Hurdles, as well as all our booklets and fact sheets. It also supports our Help Line, information forums, and the online network, as well as our policy and advocacy work. #givebreastcancerthefingerbun.

National Palliative Care Week

Did you know that this week, 21-28 May, is National Palliative Care Week? National Palliative Care Week is a national week supported by the Department of Health to raise awareness and understanding about palliative care in the Australian community.

This is a difficult subject, but your care matters. Everyone has a right to a high quality of life, right to the end of life. 82% of Australians think it is important to talk to their family about how they would want to be cared for at the end of their life, but only 28% have done so. If you're not sure how to have that conversation with your loved ones, I've attached a discussion starter below that might help.

Recognising country

Today is National Sorry Day, a day on which we acknowledge and recognise members of the Stolen Generations. Tomorrow is the start of National Reconciliation Week, which celebrates indigenous history and culture in Australia and fosters reconciliation discussion and activities.

Breast Cancer Network Australia acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the traditional owners and custodians of the land, sea and nations and pay our respect to elders, past and present. We are committed to improving our resources and support to meet the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people affected by breast cancer.

Everyone, have a pleasant weekend!
