Waiting waiting waiting

I felt a lump on 9th Aug 2014, diagnsis of cancer on 19th Aug, 1st clinic assessment 1st Sept, double mastectomy 22nd Sept......all seems an awfully long time to have those nasty little cancer critters running amok in my body....

  • I am ok about losing my breasts, it was my choice and I don't need them. No more backaches, no more underwire digging in....I also do not have a partner and I have known for 2 years now that I don't want one. I think i am very lucky. At 49 I have 2 adult children who are awesome. I have a very supportive boss and can work from home if need be. I am in a much better position to deal with this than most others. I shall win too :) xxxx

  • I am actually Ok with all this. My daughter is struggling with the waiting. It alls seems so surreal atm....I am not "sick" yet I have cancer.... The surgeon wanted to do a wide excision but I have fought tooth and nail to have the double mastectomy. I don't care about the studies that say it won't make a difference because I KNOW what I WANT. I am working fulltime so busy and I am even having a "Bye Bye Boobs" party lol. I guess some people would find my humour offensive but this is what I want to do and how I want to tackle this :) Always smiling :)

  • I know what you mean, I only had to wait a couple of weeks between seeing my surgeon and then having surgery. But once I was diagnosed, I just wanted the cancer out of my body as fast as possible. I can tell you that a week or two or three won't make a big difference in the end. That's probably not much comfort right now! Do try and stay busy as that will help the time pass. Once you have surgery, everything else becomes pretty much a whirlwind so if you can put yourself in a quiet space, it's good to enjoy this time while you wait. Things will speed up before you know it and you can feel completely out of control. The two things you can control are your head and your heart. Hang in there, you'll be in surgery before you know it. Take care and let us know how you go xo

  • Hello Katrob and welcome to this site which will offer a huge support network and lots of good information. You must be in a head spin with such quick action. I too had a double mastectomy in July. But had months to get used to the idea as I had 5 months of chemo first.

How do you feel with out your breast? You did not have long to actually think about things which sometimes is the best way to go. I am 55yrs old and have elected not to have replacements as I don't have a partner and honestly getting used to the flat chested look. Summer of course will be the time when I will problaby grieve my losing my breasts. I hope not. I think I am more than looking shapely but that's me.

Any questions or support I can offer please just ask.

    Cyber hugs coming your way
