Thinking ahead.

Hi ladies, thinking ahead at this stage. Wondering  if anyone has had a mastectomy on one breast and using a external breast  prothesis for the other breast. All replies will be greatly appreciated. My feelings are all mixed up at this stage but going ahead with a mastectomy in a few weeks and would like to know about life after a mastectomy with one remaining breast. Meeting with my breast care nurse soon so will discuss options for me after my surgery.

  • Thank you afraser. Lovely to hear your opinion. At the moment I am feeling along the way you have decided. See how I go and yes I can decide later. Hubby is so supportive I know it will be fine.lopsided is probably the only issue I think of. Nothing else really has an impact on me. Thanks for your thoughts.you have been through a lot. Good luck on your journey also.really appreciate it. x

  • Thanks Kath. Will get back in touch after my surgery. Maybe more idea what I want to do further down the track. Gee you have been through a lot on your journey.  500 kms away. long way .my surgeon operates in city but .also country so I am thankful for not too much travelling. Love my country life. Perkier boobs. Gotta be happy with that.Good luck with your future plans.x

  • PS you can make a decision much later, you don't have to do it now. So if in doubt, wait till you are sure.

  • Hi there

i didn't have a reconstruction, so one boob and a prosthesis. To be honest, I was never very sure about a reconstruction - large boobs probably meant an implant and possibly scarring elsewhere, if more tissue was required. I also got a very large and persistent seroma, which took neartly a year to clear and required surgery. So once all that was cleared up, I was reluctant to intervene again.

I find a prosthesis fine - after a year with soft, easy to dislodge pads because of the seroma, I found a prosthesis wonderful! I had a slight backache the first week, due entirely to walking lopsided for a year. You can get ones for swimming, there is a rebate on cost, and care is simple. I don't strip off in public all that often (although cancer treatment should render us all immune to any issues about that, do it often enough!). And while I don't think for a second that it's an issue that husbands need to be consulted on, mine is perfectly comfortable with how I look.

Alwats good to get some opinions, I am sure there are many views.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

  • It gets better once the surgery is done, knowing most of the cancer and hopefully all is gone. Personally I was happy with the implant recon at time of mastectomy  And was delighted to awake with breasts much more pertier than I had. I've  got 1 fill and changeover  to go. My durgeons used a matrix sling and filled 3/4 full...knowing I most likely wouldn't  need radiotherapy. ..which I didn't  and knowing also I lived 500k away from him...so I have had mo fills since....1st review is after chemo completion. I chose a teardrop shsoe and the tisdue expander is teardrop shsp so loojs pretty good. If interested I can post a pic.

  • Thanks Kath. Seen breast care nurse today. She is so good filling me in on her knowledge. Caring too and makes the journey easier. I have gone back to one step at a time trying not to look too far ahead.surgery next step.like you say Six months down the track I might feel differently about what I want to have done. It is hard to know when my mind is in a turmoil at the moment.x

  • I haven't  done this but as only 10% of women having a reconstruction, there must be a lot who do. I know that many find the prostheses heavy ...especially if large breasted. But there are lighter options and even swimming models. If unsure what you should do and what you want you can just have the mastectomy and have the reconstruction later. The breast nurse should be very helpful with the options and costings etc for you. It's hard knowing what is right choice. Kath x
