Seroma

i am now 10 days post mastectomy . Drains came out after day 7, thank goodness. But now I have a lump under my arm and the scarline looks puckered. So possibly fluid under there too. I had been warned by my breast care nurse that usually if you have trouble with the drains that a seroma is likely. Fortunately I go to see my surgeon today for a follow up. I'm wondering if they will drain it or as I have read,  wait for the fluid to be absorbed by the body. It is uncomfortable at night though and I got up at 4.30 this morning to take pain killers.

What have been anyone else's experiences?

hope everyone is going well?

  • Saw the physio and surgeon yesterday. Physio said scar line looks good, just need to remove the saroma. The breast care nurse syringed out about 90 MM., which might not seem like much but I am quite a tiny person. There is also fluid under the scar line which they couldn't actually remove but they are going to try again on Friday. I still feel quite tender form where they put the drains in. The scarline itself is still numb.

thanks everyone for your inputs. Always puts my mind at rest. ????

  • Hi Linda, my drain fell out after 7 days. I had 2 collections, but not much discomfort, so they've been left alone. I would think if it's waking you enough to need pain relief, they probably need to drain it.

How did your follow up appointment go? Did you get your results? Hope everything else is ok.

    Take care, Lyn

  • Hi, I had mastectomy about 3 weeks ago. I've got a bit of puckering and lump where the scar is - but I think it takes awhile to settle down. I've got some silicon gel to put on it.

I also have cording - not sure what exactly that is - but you can feel it under my arm where they cut out a lymph node to check on it. It causes my arm to be tender - so I visited an occupational therapist/ lymphodemia physio that my breast care nurse referred me to. Have had 1 massage so far and some laser on it. She said one of my lymph cords/areas might have snagged on the scar tissue. Anyway, don't know if you had lymph nodes cut out but thought you might have something similar if under arm.

Hope you get it sorted out soon.

  • I had my seroma drained three times under ultrasound over 4 weeks- one of my drains had blocked - no problems after last drainage, have since had 8 weeks radiotherapy - fully finished 10 days ago?? ( I had a nipple preserving mastectomy and immediate reconstruction with implant on 14 August)

Hoping for fully healed skin for the new year (under breast has healed, under arm almost - just dry skin at lower edge ) mainly nipple area as that received x5 boost radiation?? It is still bright red - thank fully no sensation had returned there as yet??

    All the best

  • Hi Linda,

Think it may just depend on how much fluid is there as they can take some time to absorb, and if it's bothering you I think it's worth asking the question :-) I had a seroma drained after my mastectomy and although it didn't get it all out what was left did eventually absorb. Similarly after my reconstruction I had a large seroma that swooshed when I moved (bit unnerving!), so it definitely needed draining :-) Hope your appointment goes well and they are able to help you. Best wishes, Jane xx

  • Hi Lindyloo

Hard to tell yet whether the fluid will absorb or not. If it continues for another week or so, I would ask your surgeon about the advisability of massage (a good lymphoedema therapist could do this) as you don't want it to linger.

Mine lingered and it was a thorough nuisance. Not painful, but the fluid amount was often large and bulky, and with hindsight led to three infections, the last one serious.

After diagnosis and surgery, minimization of anything else is the name of the game!!

    Good luck.
