Hormones post surgery

Hello Ladies
This is my very first post.  2 weeks ago diagnosed with breast cancer, Mastectomy last Thurs, going back to surgery next Thurs for node removal as cancer was detected in two nodes first surgery.  Obviously the stress of being diagnosed and the surgery has taken a toll on my body hormone wise. Im 51 pre monopause, very regular periods, but have been bleeding like a light period since surgery.  I did need to take Ural when recovering from surgery.  Is this common ?

  • Thanks Brenda
Well after a week and a bit everything has settled down..one less thing to worry about!  Cancelled the ultrasound this morning on my uterus.  So happy about this as they said they might have to do it internally if I couldnt keep off the toilet...UGH..the things us women have to face. XO
  • My periods were crazy all over the place all my life so most of my life I was on contraceptive pill which regulated it wonderfully. When diagnosed with bc my doctor said get off them immediately, the estrogen in the pill is feeding the cancer. So I went from wonderfully regular to off the pill and nothing, nada, zip.
Several weeks after surgeries and into my second dose of chemo i got the muther of all periods and had to be very careful to keep up my iron levels. My oncologist said this is normal as chemo also does wierd things to periods. I am happy to say over a year since chemo and surgery I don't have periods at all any more, not even spotting. Saving me a fortune in pads and tampons I tell you lol. I will be 55 next month.

  • @LisaO it is hard to tell whether menopause was on its way and coincided with your surgery. When I went through menopause my periods were all over the place. Some light some heavy. I would also recommend to see your GP .As to urinary tract infections well I am very good at catching them particularly after surgery. So for me pretty common. Hope surgery goes well and recovery is swift.
  • I don't believe this is common and I think you should at least see your GP about the ongoing bleeding with no known trauma. Perimenopause can be a difficult time but you need to ensure that is why it is happening. You would normally be aware if you had a catheter but that would be pink urine  (and resolved by now) and not menstrual blood. Hope you find a solution soon.
  • You've certainly been thrown in the deep end, @LisaO This stuff is incredibly stressful on both a physical and emotional level and any body function that is subject to variation is likely to chuck a wobbler.

With everything happening so quickly it's hard to determine what is 'normal' and what is not. Urinary tract infections are very common, you quite possibly had a catheter in during your surgery (something that is not often disclosed if you don't ask) couple that with a low fluid intake, odd diet and, of course, stress and you can see why you are vulnerable to those sorts of bugs at that time. If you have had antibiotics you also may end up with galloping fanny itch (thrush) which makes no sense when you are obsessing about your boobs.

Give yourself some time; keep a diary so you can explain exactly what happened and when and who you told about it.

    Good luck, Marg

  • @LisaO Welcome! Sorry you have joined us, however there is alot of support here! I'm sorry you have to go back to surgery, that's tough after what youve just been through. I can't offer much sorry, I'm 49 but unfortunately I had a recurrence at 47 and Chemo threw me into Menopause uuugh. I had a single mastectomy/diep flap reconstruction in Feb this year, and well my periods had already stopped thanks to Chemo.  It could be coincidental, but I hadn't heard of surgery having an affect on hormones. Hopefully some others may have experienced something similar. Maybe you could ask your Breast Care Nurse too, they may have an idea. Hugs Melinda xo
