Dried blood Collection.

A friend in America has just had a double mastectomy. Apparently she has dried blood in the surgery area. The surgeon has told her that he may have to operate to remove it if it doesn't emulsify by itself. Has anyone else had this done? Or heard of it? I haven't so I'm asking on her behalf. They seem to do it differently over there e.g. the surgeon has to remove the drains. I just went home and had a nurse do it at the local hospital.

  • Yes,I think it sounds like a haematoma too - which is just a collection of blood(old blood if it’s no longer leaking)If it’s small then the body will reabsorb but if it’s large then it needs removing.I would think it’d be a small incision.
  • Well I guess its a haematoma that is drying out  and therefore not being sucked out by tbe drain. Left there could mean eventually a pocket that could lead to a seroma so I guess in reality they would only go  back  in if they have to. I'm sure it wouldn't be much bigger than the scar from laprascopic surgery but I'm just guessing.
  • It sounds like a haematoma  - my husband that something similar after surgery (bowel cancer) - his was bit dramatic as it started leaking blood copiously through his shirt while he was lying on the bed doing Sudoku!  But apparently not - issue is whether it is old blood or new blood? Or is it not possible to tell? Suctioning it out may be fine if it is old blood (in which case it probably is a haematoma) but raises questions if it's not. Rather hard to provide any help at such a distance...... Best wishes to your friend though.
  • Sounds like a haematoma from the procedure. Sometimes they remove and sometimes they don’t - dependant on amount, surgeon preference, anaesthetic risk  etc.

i just re read your second post and it’s not a haematoma. Perhaps she’s best to ring rooms and clarify.

    Hope its sorted out.

  • Another detail. The dried blood is on the left side at the top. The surgeon wants to make another incision at the top to suction it out, he has left a drain in to see if it helps. My friend is worried about the procedure as it means more surgery, another scar, and she has never heard of this before.
  • Also, it has had an ultrasound and is not a seroma or haematoma.
