Arm nerve pain post surgery
Hi everyone. Just wondering if anyone has had problems with nerve pain in arm after lumpectomy? I had surgery two days ago and they removed 5 lymph nodes but said they didn’t touch any nerves but the back of my arm and armpit are numb and I get horrendous random pain down my arm at random times and all from different movements... was maybe after any suggestions to help ease this (apart from icing?) until I see surgeon next week?
Thanks 😊

- Newbie3312Member@kezmusc thanks for reply and some positive news! I’m very lucky I got the all clear last night that my tumour handbrake spread so I’m extremely grateful. I will keep up my exercises and stop being impatient 🥴. I have performance horses and racehorses so will have to be strong before I get on the race Them. I’m glad you’re well. Happy riding xxx
- kezmuscMemberHey @Newbie3312,
Thanks for the tag @Sister .
I run a horse boarding and training stables. I was back in the saddle about 4-6 weeks after (mind you riding after chemo throws your balance out it interesting). I just chose the horses I worked with for a while so I didn't get that arm pulled on. It made dismounting a bit difficult for a while (short girls always ride tall horses huh?) I just made sure I let go and jumped off with that arm clear. Watch that one it hurt.
Anyhoo, if you've got a good reliable horse to start on for a few weeks you should be fine soon enough. I cannot stress how important those exercises are though. Do what they give you then double it. Everything you can do above your head will help. I chose to hand paint a tongue and groove ceiling as my therapy.
Don't worry sweet you'll be lugging hay bales and shovelling poop before you know it.
xoxoxoxoxo - SisterMemberI'm not sure why they don't warn us of this - it's frightening and confusing - but please don't despair as it's unlikely to cause long-term problems with activity. Go and see a specialist physio to ensure that you are recovering movement properly and that you are measured for a baseline for potential lymphoedema - another thing that is often not spoke about enough before surgery. I don't think @kezmusc has let it slow her down with horses!
- ddonMemberI had bad burning pains behind my arm also but they settled quickly and within a couple of weeks I didn’t notice them anymore. The soreness/ tightness under my arm with movement lasted longer but I am 7 months down and don’t have any discomfort at all now and I haven’t had any for a long time. Don’t despair yet - you might be surprised how quickly you heal and the pain settles down. The first weeks are hard because it’s all unknown and it’s an unexpected pain but for me anyway it all came good. Be kind to yourself and give it some time.
- Newbie3312Member@Sister thanks for reply. Sorry to hear you’re still having problems. I’m actually really upset no one warned me about this previous to surgery so I could at least mentally prepare for it. My job and my life revolves around riding horses and would appear this is going to impact on this. I was given the impression I’d have surgery wasn’t told of any potential complications and would be back riding within 2-3 weeks.I’ve been so positive throughout the process but after another night of night sweats and pain I’m really struggling this morning 🥴
- SisterMemberFor a couple of weeks after surgery, the burning pain was so bad that I was convinced I was blistering and bleeding. I couldn't believe that there was not even a sign of redness under my arm. My GP gave me some soft wadding (the kind they put under casts, etc) which I taped in place so that it covered the entire area and stopped any skin to skin contact. That helped a little. Mostly, it's a matter of time. Two and a half years later, the area is still numb and occasionally fires with random sensations but I'm more used to it. Keep up your exercises.
- Newbie3312, it has been 10 months since my full auxiliary clearance from under armpit, and my upper arm is still numb.at the back and underneath. I have full movement of my arm, and that’s even after breaking my shoulder ( surgery side) , so keep up the exercises,
lt gets better with time, even the feeling of numbness , not so quite annoying.I remembered doing some self massage very gently, I still do .
Take care and be kind to yourself
sending hugs xx - Newbie3312Member@Shellshocked2018_ thank you. It sounds like it’s all normal from what you and other have said. I was just left a little in dark and wondering if there were any other things I could do to help relieve it. Numbness annoying but not a problem. Can’t say I love the nerve pain tho! 😂 🥴. Sounds like everyone has been through much worse! Best wishes xx
