tamoxifen side effects

I wouldn't mind some advice/support/hints on experiences and how you have dealt with tamoxifen side effects.  I have been on it now for two months and am having headaches, nausea, very tired no matter how much sleep I get at night, some cramping around the ovaries and period pain like cramps... sounds like fun!

For 5 years!?  how will I do it?

  • Hi @Pattie - I would not only talk with your bc surgeon but most definitely the oncologist. He/she  is a medical oncologist and so their speciality is medicine and the prescribing of it.

Perhaps do a little bit of research - or lots of - and arm yourself with questions - none of them are silly.

Being informed is a good thing and knowledge is power. Perhaps you could have a look at the clinical information on it online.

I would also speak with your GP.

As @Iserbrown said not everybody gets all of the side effects that have been mentioned above.

I was on tamoxifen for several years and also took mine in the evening - before going to bed.

Some of the symptoms that I got  included "pre-menstrual" like symptoms for some time, hot flushes and some irritability (or a lot if you ask my husband !).

    Best wishes for your appointment.

  • Thank you so much inn getting back to me.   It is something that I am going to have to deal with.
  • Pattie I feel your anxiety however we don't all suffer the full range of side effects on medications.
Good luck with your discussion and hopefully you are one of those with few side effects.  Take care
  • I am supposed to be taking it but I am very nervous with the side effects.  I am seeing my breast surgeon tomorrow and have a talk with him as I feel it is difficult to talk to the oncologist.
  • Are you taking it at night or in the morning?  I take it at night so that the worst side effects are happening while I sleep.
  • Yes it's a long time ! I've been on it 3 months and have had the same side effects. I'm taking omega 3 the chewable ones and a multivitamin, also turmeric. Seems to be working. Still get headaches and dizziness like vertigo at times. I just keep going with it , each day is different. I hope it improves for you. Let me know if the vitamins help . All the best
  • Thanks for your comments.   Last week was hard.. headaches, nausea, dizziness, fatigue... I had a massage and some acupunture on Saturday and I found it really helped.  No headache.. full of energy on Sunday and Monday.   Bit tired today but not like last week.   I am seeing a naturopath as well in an attempt to nail any side effects.   5 years is a long time....

  • I have the same issues and the fatigue is horrendus, Im starting to think I just dont want to be on this drug anymore,  I think I'll give it until New Year and reascess.  My onc just say's "soilder on", it just plain sucks to think Ill be like this for 5 years :(

  • I have been on it now for about 8 months. In the beginning,I also had that cramping, and then some light bleeding.I had to see a gynaecologist/onco and then I had a simple exploratory surgery. All was fine, and he explained it would settle down, and is not uncommon when you start Tamoxifen. It did settle, and the only side effect I have now are hot flushes/ prickly heat sensation.I had some nausea early on,but that stopped also.I think just give it some time, and try to do some daily exercise like walking,Cheers Robyn.xox
