Tamoxifen and hot flushes.
Hi all, new to the forum so here goes. I am 5 years (yayyyy) post breast cancer diagnosis and treatment - surgery , chemo, radiation and tamoxifen. Hot flushes are the bane of my life, for the last year or so. I can't have hormonal therapy because I was oestrogen and progesterone receptor positive so I was put on Effexor which helps somewhat, but not much (it does help with my anxiety, or craziness, as I call it

- DaisyMarigoldMemberHi - if you can find a really good experienced medical herbalist, they can help with managing the hot flushes. I was on HRT for 17 years after a hideous menopause, and it all came back when I got BC in June 2103 and had to stop taking HRT. It took my Melbourne herbalist about 6 months to get the hot flushes under control with a tonic, but I am fine now. It's not cheap, but it's worth my peace of mind and physical comfort. My herbalist has a PhD in this stuff, she's had breast cancer, and she know what can/can't be prescribed for BC ladies. So - no need to suffer! xx
- melclarityMemberRosie Ive only realized that of late lol, I truly think its purely menopause not the meds :)
- RosiePMemberThank you Melinda, I hadn't thought of that. Perhaps it isn't the medication after all! My oncologist talked about changing me to arimidex, or maybe another 5 years of tamoxifen. I'll eait and see what he says in January. Thank you xx
- melclarityMemberHey Rosie!
Ive been on Tamoxifen and am now on Arimidex, and Im not convinced my hot flushes come from the medications at all. I had NONE on Tamoxifen 5yrs ago and was on it 4yrs. Ive been on Arimidex for 10 months...but my flushes started whilst having Chemo, being thrown into menopause, so I believe now its purely menopause. Its a crap shoot! they'll eventually subside, mine have lessened as time goes on. x Melinda - NeMemberSounds like my life. I am going nuts with the hot flushes and my menoupausal state at age 41. Add to it osteoporosis in my spine and hips from chemo /hormone blockers. Achy joints, my knees feel like they will break every morning I try to get up. I am stiff and feel old and exhausted from lack of sleep most nights. I really struggle to stay possitive. I used to be young fit and healthy and since bc my body have possibly aged by 20 years in 18 months! I would like to know if there is any hope in sight for the hot flushes to go away or are we doomed for the rest of our lives with it.....do they pass???
I'm on Aromasin, Prolia injections & Effexor. - RosiePMemberSocoda thank you, will definitely give it a go! And thank you, feel very happy to have teached the big 5 - another 40 will do me ! xx
- Brenda5MemberI can't seem to regulate my own body temp at all and go coat on coat off coat on coat off. During summer I will be doing the tea towel trick of putting a damp one around my neck particularly at the base of the skull. It is very similar to an eczema sufferer with pin prick feeling to the skin but without the rash that goes with it.
- socodaMemberHi Rosie, Congratulations on the big 5!!!! I'm also eostrogen and progesterone positive and read where a few of the ladies were suggesting having an atomiser filled with water to spray when a hot flush hits. I couldn't find an atomiser suitable for water so ended up buying Swisse Deep Sea Hydrating Mist Toner. Smells beautiful, is cooling, and is a toner all in one. Talk about multi -tasking!!!! Wishing you all the best. Xx Cath
- iserbrownMemberNow there is a reason to smile knowing they think you are odd - but hey they can't judge until such time as they have been there themselves and I hope for their sake they never have to!
- RosiePMember:) Thank you so much. I just try to keep my face cool when it starts off. Its mainly my face. People at work think I'm odd when I sit there with a cold pack to my face, but hey, whatever works <3
