Nails lifting

Hi all. I have finished chemo and have nearly finished my first week of radiation. My finger tips are numb but it is my finger nails that are worrying me. What have others done to manage nails that are lifting from the nail bed? How do you keep them short when they are uncomfortable to touch? Has anyone had fingernails fall off or do they grow out? How long does that take? Are  there manicurists that specialise in the management of nails affected by chemo. Thanks in advance.
  • Yep trimmed short is good. The beds do repair in a couple of weeks but it then takes months for the receding to grow out. I am 6mths post chemo and my thumb nails have the chemo bumps still there from about halfway up the nail so I am guessing be careful with nails for about a year. On the plus side they are now strong enough to open a ring pull can. God I missed that lol. :)
  • Thanks for the comments. My podiatrist trimmed my nails right down with sterilised equipment. ( he happens to be my son) and they feel better. Now to wait and let my body do its best.
  • Hi Prudencerose, I'm 2 years post chemo, surgery & radiation.  My nails lifted off the nail bed and were numb too.  I spoke to my nail girls and did take that product Hair Skin & Nails, not that it really did any good. I just let my nails go, kept them very short and eventually when the new nail grew through they were find.  The neuropathy in your fingers is a result of the chemo, but that too will dissipate in due course.  I also had the nails of my 2 big toes go funny, and they took about 12 months to grow out - I just let my Podiatrist look after them.  Most good nail technicians would be able to help - I'd suggest not going to those salons that appear in the big shopping centres with like 10 girls doing nails - try your local beauty salon where you would get to be treated by the same girl or girls each time.
  • My fingers threatened every round. They burned and I couldn't even scratch my nose without them hurting.

To manage the burn I kept a bowl of water near me to bathe in. I trimmed them short (this was painful) and used nail hardener. I avoided doing anything that would put strain on my nails, like opening ring pull cans (I took to using a teaspoon as a lever instead).

Unfortunately the chemicals in most polishes can be dangerous and salon manicures themselves can cause infection so I'd stay away from them at this time and stick to hardeners (I'm using Sally Hansen - Miracle Cure). It's damage to the nail bed that will cause them to fall out so stopping the nail from bending is about all (I know of) that can be done about it. Once one parts the growth rate varies, it could take 12 weeks or 8 months I'm afraid. I have high hopes though, my toenail parted a month ago and it's already 1/3 recovered.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
  • Mine was toenails. I just used clippers to keep them short...it usually started them bleeding though. So far they are just growing out and much less sore now chemo has finished a few weeks on.
