My fingers threatened every round. They burned and I couldn't even scratch my nose without them hurting.
To manage the burn I kept a bowl of water near me to bathe in. I trimmed them short (this was painful) and used nail hardener. I avoided doing anything that would put strain on my nails, like opening ring pull cans (I took to using a teaspoon as a lever instead).
Unfortunately the chemicals in most polishes can be dangerous and salon manicures themselves can cause infection so I'd stay away from them at this time and stick to hardeners (I'm using Sally Hansen - Miracle Cure). It's damage to the nail bed that will cause them to fall out so stopping the nail from bending is about all (I know of) that can be done about it. Once one parts the growth rate varies, it could take 12 weeks or 8 months I'm afraid. I have high hopes though, my toenail parted a month ago and it's already 1/3 recovered.
Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
