Mouth sore, tongue sore and nausea...any suggestions?
I am using nilstat, biotene, bi-carb and salt...some relief but open to any advice.
Nausea - is wanting to stick around. I really donʻt want to take any more medication. Have focused on breathing, mindfulness, qi gong, walking, music. My fluid intakes have missed a few beats too.
Itʻs only a hurdle, will get over it...yes?

- TasiaMember@FLClover - I will try all the suggestions to see what will work.
Trying to manage other symptoms -present and as they emerge...I just sigh....breathe it out and keep at it.
Im trying to maintain some level of paid work and it feel like I’m pushing a loaded wobbly wheel barrow uphill. Truth is what scares me most is not the uphill challenge known to me now but what awaits - next weeks 4th cycle and treatments that follow.
How will I manage more of whatever it throws at me? - TasiaMember@Blossom1961 - Thank you
- TasiaMemberHi@Locksley and BerylC - having the support and advice sparks hope and spirit to keep trying ways to ease the experience of the symptoms. How good a job I’m doing at it - don’t know...
When eating somewhat normal is not on chemos agenda, be it mouth sores, nausea or lack of appetite I make smoothies (strawberry/blueberries//banana/pear yoghurt, honey, finely ground mixed raw nuts&seeds and hemp seeds (I add a whole kiwi when my mouth can tolerate the pain or beetroot kale/carrot/apple/ginger/mint juices. If I can, I drink them slowly or spoon feed self.
For extra support, I invite Van Morrison to join me - music helps me chase some of the nasties away 💃 - FLCloverMemberHello @Tasia, you can buy aloe Vera juice from Woolworths or from Chemist Warehouse (usually get mine from there and just remembered I forgot to buy myself another bottle). It’s around $13. Be careful not to buy the sweet aloe Vera juice that’s an actual drink. The real aloe Vera juice is mostly clear, is not sweet at all, has a bit of a strange taste, and you have about 50ml twice daily. I’ve been drinking it for a few years now and it’s wonderful. I usually have it in the morning on an empty stomach and right before bed. You might also like to try sucking on the gel part of an actual aloe Vera leaf, if you can find one. They’re quite common in gardens and not expensive. They heal sores pretty quickly.Good luck 🤞🤞
- Blossom1961Member@Tasia I purchased aloe juice from the supermarket in the health food section. Coles and woolies both sold it, white bottle, green sticker. You can drink it but I just gargled with it. If thesores are down your throat, swallow it. I did swallow a couple times as it is supposed to be good for you. Hope it works for you.
- Beryl_C_MemberNot sure if this is relevant but years ago I read that pineapple, paw paw and kiwi fruit all contain an enzyme that actually breaks down flesh - this is why they are often included in a tenderiser mix. When I was a kid I disliked pineapple as it made my tongue feel raw. I never thought of this until about five years ago when my mouth was 'volcano craters' and speaking was a real challenge. I tried everything from the chemist and the nurses gave me an assortment of rinses and gels - nothing eased the pain. I created my own grated ginger poultice and bought ginger candy at an Asian grocer - that was the only thing that eased the pain, I also made my own ginger and honey tea using grated ginger. I pulverised my food into a 'baby food' mash and when possible ate with a straw. I also lost a few kgs. As @Locksley said, this business is not fun, we are with you!
- LocksleyMemberHi @Tasia,
This business is not fun is it. I also found twinnings ginger tea helpful for nausea. All the other suggestions made before are good ones. I had a few lemonade icy poles and some pineapple juice too. The juice would sting a bit but I felt it worked. - TasiaMember@Sister - yep I have oral thrush and have been recommended nilstat which is sort of working. The teeth, gums and inner mouth walls and perimeter of the tongue are not happy campers. I am upping bicarb and ginger...see how that goes
- SisterMemberJust a thought - have you considered that you may have oral thrush? I got it once during chemo but a short course of Fungilin after a visit to the GP got rid of it very quickly. It's a fairly common side effect of chemo.
