First round of Chemo

Hi Ladies so I had my first round of AC chemo on Tuesday I am having a hard time with the Nausea. Was just wondering how others coped with it. I am taking the pills they gave me but am hoping that it gets better I do not think I could do this for 8 weeks. I can not eat ginger. So am at a loss does any one have any other ideas

  • WIth my first chemo E/C I had green tea with ginger, apple cider vinegar with honey, arrowroot biscuits all the time, these seemed to keep the nausea at bay.  Plus I made sure I ate something small every 2 hours (as recommended by the chemo nurse).  Sometimes just an arrowroot biscuit or fruit and I drank lots and lots of water (still do).  With Taxol I find there is no nausea.  I still eat something every two hours and if I feel a bit off I will drink green tea or vinegar.  But I do get Zofran in my pre-chemo meds so I think this lasts for a couple of days.

If you cant get relief tell your Oncologist or nurse.  I understand there are lots of drugs out there to help get through the yucky bits of treatment.  Dont try to tough it out on your own.  Be gentle on yourself.  Take care

  • Thanks guys, I have Nausea starting in the early morning through most of the day until about 7pm then I quickly eat tea before I feel sick again. I am taking the ones they gave me but not thrilled if this is going to last the whole 8 weeks. I feel  like I have the worst hangover of my life and I did not even get to enjoy the party that caused it. annz53 the biscuits you ate were they ginger nut cookies coz those I could eat!! Will ask about the Zofran when I go for my next round.

  • Hi, I agree with Celeste

I was also going to say Zofran.  You can get it to dissolve as a lozenge or as a tablet form.  I am not well at the moment and have bad nausea in the mornings.  I took one as soon as I got out of bed this morning and it made such a difference and I have been prescribed to take them twice a day.

I would still take the meds they suggest prior to actually having your chemo (the night and day before) and use the Zofran as a backup.  They worked for me.  They are not cheap but they are worth it. Check with your medical team if you need to as well.

I originally got prescribed them when I was on my chemo and had a High Tea at the Duxton for my daughter and then the wedding back in March/April.  They were my major backup plan.

  • Hi Erin, I hear you and I feel for you. Everytime I had chemo I said to myself I can't do this but I did and I know you too will get through it.  Making sure you take the tablet for Nausea (in my case it was Pramin) the right amount of times per day rather than taking it when you feel lousy worked for me. Also I took to snacking every 2hrs;  just on a bikkie or fruit or whatever I felt like 'cos I seemed to feel better with a tummy with food in it rather than an empty tummy. Also, make sure you are drinking the 2litres of water/liquid they advise us to drink.  I did eat the ginger biscuits and drank the ginger beer, not sure if it worked or not. As the days go on it really does get better so hang in there. Hope I was able to help in some small way. Ann
