Arm Nerve pain

Curious to know if anyone found Heat and/or Cold packs useful for helping with the nerve pain down the arm from post-surgery sentinel Lymph node (& breast lump removal)?
My surgeon & my oncologist have said they can prescribe meds but I would prefer not to take any pain medication.
  • @Jenni22, thanks for the info. Fortunately mine has all settled down. Took about 3 weeks after surgery (15th March) but nothing since then, thank goodness.
Hope you keeping on top of it all. hugs, Suzy
  • Hi Suzy,

I had nerve pain from my underarm to elbow post lymph node removal, found ice very beneficial.  I also saw a physio who gave me tips on lymphatic massage which has really helped.  I have also found nervoderm patches relieve some of the pain.  (You can buy these over the counter at your pharmacy.   Keep massaging even when it hurts, you are basically trying to re-programme the nerves to let them know they don’t need to tell you they are unhappy about being moved around!
  • ahaaa, @Blossom1961  ... Sorry - reading it again, I can see that now.  Apologies xx
  • @arpie, actually my GP was brilliant. The information from the surgeon was the issue.
  • @SuzyS - have you seen a specialist lymphoma person yet?  I was set up with one shortly after my surgery & was suggested that some VERY gentle massage may also help?   I was lucky & it didn't last too long - but the nerves do take some while to get over the trauma xx. Good luck

You can get some chinese 'stick on' warmers (they have similar to Tiger Balm built into them) ... they could help at night?

Oh dear, @Blossom1961 - your GP wasn't much help, eh??  I hope you've swapped GPs!! xx

  • Mine lasted for a few months. I still get sharp twinges occasionally, 4.5 yrs post op, but it settles when I massage it.
  • @Blossom1961 my surgeon, my oncologist, and the breast nurse all warned me about it prior to surgery. I had my surgery in the 15th and noticed I'm getting it more and more 'til now it's most of the time.
Spoke about tom my oncologist last week and she offered meds but I said no..lol
  • I found heat packs worked but mainly whilst they were on. Other than that, they cut down the pain by only about 15%. But worth using anyway. Any relief is worth it. My surgeon told me the pain was not caused by the op and I should go see my GP. My GP rolled her eyes and said it was a direct result of the op.
