Anastrozole side effects 4 years later?

I have been a lucky duck with minimal side effects from chemo, radiation and Anastrozole hormone treatment. Now, four years after starting on Anastrozole, my left ankle and back of right knee are sore to the point where I am hobbling and having trouble putting weight on my legs. Could this possibly be a very late side effect of Anastrozole? Any experiences out there? I do have a doctor appt. in one week. Best wishes to you all.
  • Thanks so much for your reply, have discussed today with my Oncologist :)
  • @KNP05
Have you been suffering depression all the time you have been on Anastrazole or is this a more recent occurrence? If the former, you need to discuss this urgently with your oncologist, as no-one should be putting up with such debilitating side effects. If the depression and anxiety is more recent, it’s still worth discussing with your oncologist but your GP can refer you to some appropriate counselling to help
determine if the medication is the problem, or some other issue, or the weight of having cancer and treatment. It can all pile up. But best to get help as soon as possible. Best wishes.
  • I have been taking Anastrozole for 4 years now and suffering from severe depression and anxiety, has this happened to anyone else?
  • That is a really weird coincidence, @jennyss ... I've been on Anastrozole for just over 3 years (and been doing quite well on it normally compared to Letrozole and Exemestane) & this week, I was almost crippled by incredible pain behind the left knee over a period of days ...... I was limping all over the place!  I ended up using Percutane (like Deep Heat) on it, as well as Voltaren tabs (with food) and used a knee support - and finally it has 'come good' ....

Definitely worth getting the bone density etc checked

Take care, all the best xx
  • Thanks @Afraser,
I've also been taking Alendronate 'anti-osteoporosis' medication once a week, as a bone density test done after radiation showed I was developing osteopenia, 'borderline' osteoporosis. Another bone density test done two years ago showed a borderline improvement - that was good.
  •  Hi @jennyss

Have you had bone density tests while on hormonal therapy? It’s one way of keeping track of any impact.

Best wishes for a simple solution!
