Teeth and jaw pain
Hello everyone,
I had grade 3 stage 2b IDC, 2 lymph nodes involved and DCIS that was removed but margins involved.
Left side mastectomy and axillary clearance. 4 rounds of chemo (had to stop early- toxicity) and 25 radiation, finishing end of May.
I have been on Letrazole for 9 weeks and have many of the usual side effects.
one that has just started and is quite sore is pain in my upper and lower left jaws.
This is new and not something that I have ever had before.
It gets worse when I eat hot or cold food and takes a while to settle after, then it is just like a low constant ache.
Has anyone else experienced this?
I send my love and best wishes to you all xoxo

- ArtferretMemberHi @Shakalker
That's one thing i have not had being on letrozole but had something like that years ago after having our second child, went to the dentist, they found nothing but suggested it could have been an infection in my sinus' which can refer pain to your teeth area. Could also be an ear infection because that can translate pain to your jawline, I've had that before. One last suggestion, if my shoulders are really playing up pain wise this can lead to pain in the jawline too. Good excuse for a massage!
Good luck with it all and as @kmakm said pilates is great, whether it's mat or reformer. Try and find a studio that concentrates on technique so you learn to do the exercises properly, learning which muscle groups to switch on and which to switch off ( that's the hard part) and matching your breathing to the exercise. I started off in a studio run by my osteo which was great as it very much centred on doing it right rather than doing it fast. Cathxx - primekMemberSensitive toothpaste worked a treat for myself. You can even just rub on the suspected tooth between flossing. The dentist have a fluoride free one if you have concerns. I hope it works for you.
- ShakalkerMember@kezmusc, I was lucky enough to get into the dentist today, she checked out my teeth and teeth nerves, then x-rayed my jaw.
nerves in my teeth are ok and there is no problem she could see with the teeth. One healthy tooth has an outline around it, but at this stage she says it’s not tooth related. She suggested sensitive toothpaste and a revisit next week if it doesn’t improve. I have now moved to Panadol in the hope it helps. - kmakmMember@Shakalker :*
I did a twice weekly oncology rehab course for seven weeks which was excellent, then three months of ExMed which was three times a week. That really brought a return of strength and some fitness. That finished at the beginning of last December. Then the summer and lack of funds intervened, and depression really took hold.
I worry about my hands. They were the area most affected by chemo, and the Letrozole has really got into them. They are so weak compared to before I had cancer. I have one of those hand squeezer thingies next to where I watch TV so I can pump out a few sets every night.
Anyway, some of the literature around coping with Letrozole side effects suggests that yoga, gentle stretching of the joints, and pilates, strengthening the muscles round the joints to help better support them, can relieve the symptoms. So I'm giving them a go. I've found a wonderful new place that's newly opened nearby, got a great deal on the membership, and am going three times a week. Four last week! I've always enjoyed both activities, especially pilates when I've done it before, and that hasn't changed. I've only been doing it for a few weeks and I'm looking forward to feeling stronger as time goes by.
It's a cliché because it's true: the best form of exercise is one that you enjoy. Team sports have never been my bag, so I won't see me at netball! If you want to rebuild your strength, see if you can find an oncology rehab class in your area to start with, or get a referral to an exercise physiologist. Once you've worked with them for a bit you'll get a bit of strength and confidence back, and then you can branch out into whatever takes your fancy. Hiking, tennis, swimming, tai chi, bike riding, dancing, yoga...
Exercise is the first thing they tell you to do when you're depressed, so hopefully what I'm doing will help on that front too.
What form of exercise appeals to you? K xox - primekMemberI'd be having a dental check. It sounds like nerve pain. I had something similar with some enamel erosion. A crack in a tooth can cause something similar. So I'd be checking it out.
- kezmuscMemberHi @Shakalker ,
Although I am on a different drug, for the first 4 or 5 months I did have jaw pain. On the left side only. TMJ pain is another one that's not on the list of "common side effects" but seems to be reasonably common when you start looking in to it. It has to do with low estrogen levels. So if Tamoxifen can do it there's probably no reason the AI's cant. - ShakalkerMemberThanks @Sister, I shall invest in some this week also. 👍🏻
- SisterMemberI developed sensitive teeth during the months after chemo and I had a couple of fillings come out (with some tooth attached). It would be a remarkable coincidence if it didn't come from treatment but whether chemo or Letrozole, who knows? I have since had a full checkup with the dentist and he could not see any areas of concern so it's the sensitive toothpaste for me for now.
- Michele_BMemberBest wishes,😂
- Michele_BMemberHi @Shalkalker, we all seem to have such a range of aches and pains, don't we?
Weirdly, since I have been on arimidex (about 6 months) a couple of times I have had quite an ache in my left hand jaw joint. Not teeth, just the joint, i put it down to another arthritic joint, bit who knows? Hope you get your problem sorted.
Nest wishes, Michele
