@Shakalker :*
I did a twice weekly oncology rehab course for seven weeks which was excellent, then three months of ExMed which was three times a week. That really brought a return of strength and some fitness. That finished at the beginning of last December. Then the summer and lack of funds intervened, and depression really took hold.
I worry about my hands. They were the area most affected by chemo, and the Letrozole has really got into them. They are so weak compared to before I had cancer. I have one of those hand squeezer thingies next to where I watch TV so I can pump out a few sets every night.
Anyway, some of the literature around coping with Letrozole side effects suggests that yoga, gentle stretching of the joints, and pilates, strengthening the muscles round the joints to help better support them, can relieve the symptoms. So I'm giving them a go. I've found a wonderful new place that's newly opened nearby, got a great deal on the membership, and am going three times a week. Four last week! I've always enjoyed both activities, especially pilates when I've done it before, and that hasn't changed. I've only been doing it for a few weeks and I'm looking forward to feeling stronger as time goes by.
It's a cliché because it's true: the best form of exercise is one that you enjoy. Team sports have never been my bag, so I won't see me at netball! If you want to rebuild your strength, see if you can find an oncology rehab class in your area to start with, or get a referral to an exercise physiologist. Once you've worked with them for a bit you'll get a bit of strength and confidence back, and then you can branch out into whatever takes your fancy. Hiking, tennis, swimming, tai chi, bike riding, dancing, yoga...
Exercise is the first thing they tell you to do when you're depressed, so hopefully what I'm doing will help on that front too.
What form of exercise appeals to you? K xox
