Pacitaxol and taste loss

hi all
i am wondering if anyone experienced a loss of taste/ dry mouth on Taxol, how long after finishing were you able to taste food, I have three weeks left on chemo, and can’t really taste anything anymore, I am getting so fed up of it, i know it sounds like a minor problem, but I really miss tasting food, as it should be.
  • Hi @Spillsy,

Chemo mouth sux.  Even chocolate tasted awful much to my disgust.  Gargle with bi carb or soda water is good.  Think I ate my body weight in fruit tingles and peppermints!  Adding salt or soy sauce to everything is the only way I could taste it.  Only took about two weeks for it to start coming back though so that was good.  Tooth paste still tastes weird after a year, or maybe my brain has created an odd connection between toothpaste and chemo.  I think I brushed my teeth every hour throughout :)
    Blah!
  • Hi @Spillsy - I'm just one treatment in on AC - still have 3 to go then 12 x taxol but I've found the biggest side effect for me even at this early stage is in my mouth. I still have taste buds but my tongue always feels coated and I'm craving vegemite toast (for the salt) and refrigerated tinned fruit (for the sweet and cold). I'm following your experience with a great deal of interest! Looking forward to being where you are now, and seeing the light at the end of the treatment tunnel.
  • Hi there @Spillsy. I had 4 rounds of AC and 4 rounds of taxol. And I had the same problem with my taste being affected. Had cravings for salty/bitter foods like beef chow mein. Chucked heaps of verges in it and  Ate heaps of it!  Couldn’t stand anything sweet except ice cream which was weird but my taste came back after a couple weeks of finishing. I bet it’s hard living in tassie with all that beautiful food!  I’d love to go down there and eat my way around it yum!  Big hug. Margie x
  • Around 5 weeks after finishing. So save your celebration dinner until then. X
  • hi Spillsy it comes back fairly quickly once you stop chemo.  it is frustrating
