Stats on Thyroid cancer after Breast cancer and chemo

Hi Everyone,

I was just wondering and trying to do some research on the number of people that get Thyroid cancer after having chemo for breast cancer.

My Breast surgeon said she is amazed at the number of breast cancer clients that now have thyroid cancer. I havent had radiation only chemo x 6 sessions (FEC + Docsetaxel) I have had 1 year of Herceptin. and have have one year of  Tamoxifen with 4 years still to go.

So If anyone has any knowledge of this occurance, I would be ever so grateful.

  • Hi Ladies, I had never heard of this connection, till last week when I had a skin check. I have a goiter, (enlarged thyroid ). I have this checked every two years and my thyroid hormone levels have always been normal. The skin Dr noticed this goiter, and asked about it. She said, that the breast and thyroid gland are the 2 most commonly cancer effected organs if there is low iodine present. I never knew this, but have always eaten iodised salt, as a goiter can happen if you are low in iodine. She has suggested that I have an iodine urinary test. I have never had one of these when I have the thyroid checked. It makes you wonder, and I will ask my oncologist about this when I see him on Tuesday. I will let you know what he says. Love Chris xxx
