Hi Everyone, I was just wondering and trying to do some research on the number of people that get Thyroid cancer after having chemo for breast cancer. My Breast surgeon said she is amazed at the number of breast cancer clients that now have thyroid cancer. I havent had radiation only chemo x 6 sessions (FEC + Docsetaxel) I have had 1 year of Herceptin. and have have one year of Tamoxifen with 4 years still to go. So If anyone has any knowledge of this occurance, I would be ever so grateful. Chrissy D xo

Hi Ladies, I had never heard of this connection, till last week when I had a skin check. I have a goiter, (enlarged thyroid ). I have this checked every two years and my thyroid hormone levels have always been normal. The skin Dr noticed this goiter, and asked about it. She said, that the breast and thyroid gland are the 2 most commonly cancer effected organs if there is low iodine present. I never knew this, but have always eaten iodised salt, as a goiter can happen if you are low in iodine. She has suggested that I have an iodine urinary test. I have never had one of these when I have the thyroid checked. It makes you wonder, and I will ask my oncologist about this when I see him on Tuesday. I will let you know what he says. Ive got a Goitre too, like Chris. So does my daughter. They were discovered accidentally by our observant GP who noticed them when we were talking to her! I can only see mine if I swallow and stop and feel. We just have an ultra sound every year and a biopsy if there is any change in size. We both have several small ones actually, but thyroid function is normal so apparently nothing to worry about! You reminded me I'm due again!

HI Chrissy, I spoke with my oncologist today about a link between thyroid cancer and breast cancer. He doesn't believe there is a link. He said the supposed link was thought to come from radiation of the breast which might be too close to the thyroid. He doesn't think enough radioactive scatter could occur to cause this. My research through Google suggested that breast cancer might follow thyroid cancer, but not the other way around. I think I prefer to go with the oncologist on this one, as I don't want anything else to worry about. Love Chris xx
