Heartburn and feeling like a lump to swallow past

I have received my first treatment of FEC, on Tuesday this week, D to come later.
I have a port installed, my infusions started at 1pm and finished at 4:30, toward the end I developed nausea, not too bad which I have had meds for, this seems to help. Day 3 I am experiencing heartburn and it feels like a lump in my gut that rises, I can swallow fluids and mush and don’t have a temperature or other problems. I was given stuff for nausea and I have been careful to take only as needed.
I am day 3 and this started this morning. What is best to take to settle this.

  • My doctor diagnosed me with GERD when I was on chemo. He gave me some pills for it which got me over the worst of it. I don't need the pills now, just a Rennies or Quickeze but it took a long time to get better with it.
  • I had stemitil as none of the on the shelf methods worked for my heartburn. I took it the night before treatment and then for the following four nights. Everybody is different. I found I couldn’t drink anything but water which made me feel bloated, even just a sip. I then found I could drink frappes and I was very happy to do so. Constipation - Ugh. Still Ongoing since the start of treatment and I finished end October. I am under the Pharmacist care for this. A change of diet didn’t help me at all so osmolax, senna and lactulose. I have managed to cut them down to a third to what I was on so hopefully will be able to cut them out altogether over the next four weeks. Just do whatever it takes. I hate chemicals in my body but Natural remedies couldn’t compete with the chemo side effects so I just took whatever they gave me for relief
  • Try soda water @Shakalker . I found the fizz helped with that disgusting dead grey tongue business--use the first couple of slurps as a mouthwash then spit it out. The bubbles also encourage burping which, yuk as it sounds, helps with nausea. I was lucky enough to never need more than the occasional Stemitil-- I had every other reaction known to science but it chemo didn't make me chuck.
If you tolerate the soda water you may enjoy a bit of lemon or pomegranate in it.
Make sure you keep records about the discomfort you are experiencing and take them to your next appointment. It is possible you are having a reaction to the drugs which can be controlled. Mxx
  • Maxolon was useless for me.  I had nausea and reflux throughout chemo but worse in the few days after each infusion.  I was prescribed Somac for reflux first then later changed to Nexium when it stopped being so effective.  I had Ativan for nausea - the bonus of that one is that it also helps you sleep as it is also an anti-anxiety drug - the drawback is that you can't drive with it.
  • I had nexium for the constant heartburn started with over the counter at 20 whatever’s and then got a script for 40 whatever’s at different times I found taking it at night vs morning  worked better but it did get ahead of the heartburn
  • My (GP) Doctor ordered nexium twice daily which also helped a lot. I needed this on taxol also as I still had heartburn on this...but no nausea. I suffered with heartburn pre chemo anyway as I have a small hernia.
  • Thanks again @primek I will go with this plan.
You have been such a help, 😘
  • A little baking soda might be okay in water...but it tastes so bad you might not tolerate it.
Yes...only use the tablets as directed. I couldn't tolerate the maxalon (restless legs etc)...so had stemitil as the base treatment  and the ondasatron before main meals.  I timed the stemitil /maxalon  about 2 hours before meal times...and stick to the time table as directed..

With constipation...I needed movichol sachets (started day before chemo round). I know it's  another medication but it's only usually 4 rounds of this horrid stuff and you just do what it takes to get through it.
  • Thank you @primek I was originally given maxalon, which helped a little with the nausea, then given ondanastron pills to dissolve under the tongue but the warnings were that I could only have 8 hourly and that they caused constipation.....something I deal with regularly and hate.
I did not so much feel nauseous this morning when this started and was hesitant to take ordanastron for it.
Thanks for your comment it has helped me and I have now taken meds to hopefully assist with this feeling. I will continue with it and keep up with the fluids. Tea is not my friend at the moment. Water is the only thing that seems to help. Would a little baking soda help?
I will seek attention if it doesn’t settle.
    Thanks again xx
  • I'd be takin that nausea medication regularly because how it works is by emptying the gut. I thought they would have recommend that? Although I was on a different chemo I had terrible gas, reflux and nausea. I needed  extra  days on dex, stemitil 8 hourly, ondasatron wafers just prior a main meal and nexium twice daily. The medications really helped and enabled me to eat and of course drink. Mylanta liquid  or tablets might help too in between to settle the burning...which is stomach acid burning your oesophagus. ..which you really don't need with all its enduring due to chemo. If it worsens over weekend you might need an emergency department visit (especially if you can't drink enough fluids)
Our stomach linings are impacted by chemo too...which might be giving the feeling of tbe lump. Hopefully it will settle in a day or so.
