First FEC chemo treatment 3 cycles
Happy Mother's Day to you all! I have had a beautiful day and feel very spoilt and blessed.
I started my first round of chemo on Thursday, they started me on a low dose due to my autoimmune disease (dermatomyositis). My bone and chest scan came back all clear except I have an enlarged gland in my neck. They are hoping that it maybe an inflammed gland due to mastectomy. So I am off for another ultral sound and possible biopsy. Please pray for me on Tuesday!
I am on fluorouracil, epirubicin and cycolphopshamide for 3 cycles. Then I go on to Docetaxel for the same nature of cycle. I have had an injection of neulasta to control the white blood platelets the day after chemo. This again is due to my DM condition. I am so blessed that they are so attentive to the complexity of my condition..
I have been taking maxolon to treat nausea and so far so good. I have also taken dexmethsone for nausea, 3 days after chemo but can't take steroids with this. I am back on steroids (15mg) tomorrow.I do get the odd flare especially during the morning and evening since not taking the steroids. They are trying to taper me off the steroids. I am now down to 15 mg and then 10 mg next week. I will meet with my rheumy this week. Hope the steroid taper is not going to do my head in!!!
Thank you all so much for your tips to make my first chemo cycle smooth, fingers crossed Wk 2 is not too gruesome as anticipated.. I am now bracing myself for the hair appointment to get the head shave done. Lucky it is going to Winter here, I get to wear cool Winter hats!! Have a great week everyone!

Good to hear you made it to Kal and you live in such a beautiful part of the world. We went to Esperance tor a weekend when we lived in Kambalda and I still have a tea towel. Have you ever been to Brisbane? It's such a long way for you to travel.
I know there are so many things to contend with on this chemo journey. N'er a dull moment! I have spoken to my latest update in my message to you. Take good care and here's to a better week! Hugsx

Hi Mares, Yes did make it to Kal and had a lovely couple of days, as you say nice to be away from the home environment for a little. I actually live in Esperance, which as you would know isn't that far from Kalgoorlie, about 4 hrs. Really amazing the history there, just loved wandering through the museum and spent ages at the lookout for the super pit. Unfortunately missed a tour, being a long weekend were booked out, never mind, maybe another trip.
Wow I can't believe you seem to have so many of the same problems as I have, bloody cold sores, seem to have permanent cold, and generally feel miserable. The spaced out one is really weird, and I have actually not gone out in the car a few times, just don't feel co ordinated enough to be confident driving, and for me that is a big thing, having always driven myself everywhere, whenever. Sore throat, well that seems to be a permanent part of life these days. Eeeek, what a lot of complaints I have this morning, must have climbed out of bed on the wrong side!!!!
Well guess better get a bit organised and start the day proper, more coffee and then shower. Hope you are doing okay still and have a good day today. xx

Hi Annie, hope your trip to Kalgoorlie is going smoothly. I think it's a great idea to get away from all the familiar environmnet and feel "normal" again whatever that maybe. I used to live in Kambalda in 1989-1993. My ex worked in the mines then. Where exactly are you? What a small world!!!
I feel for you feeling so tired and yes I believe this is time for you to slow down and take care of yourself. I can relate to your early rising and trying to nap during the day. I was awake at 3.30 this morning and couldn't get to sleep during the day. I am pumped on steroids and am like a maniac with the chores and gardening today. It reminds me of when I was medicated for my disease at the start of the year. I was only get 3 hr sleeps but did nap during the day. I am still on 10mg of steroids (prednisone) a day. So I haven't felt the fatigue so far. I hope you can fit in your nanna nap as you will probably find yourself exhausted and emotional.
I am finding this one a tad different. I felt really spaced out and a touch nauseated on Thursday afternoon. I Islept for a few hours when I got home. I haven't had any nausea so far, thank goodness. The dreaded cold sore that took me 3 weeks to get rid of is trying to come back. I hope I don't get the mouth ulcers and sore throat this time.
Take care of yourself and enjoy your day out and big hugs to you tooxxx

Lovely to hear from you again, and glad things aren't going too badly for you you. I seem to be really tired after my 2nd dose, but maybe that is because I didn't have my nanna nap yesterday. Being an early riser find it hard to sleep in so usually try for mid afternoon nap, but not always possible, so maybe need to make it happen.
At this stage on track to head off in the morning for my night away in Kalgoorlie, and starting to look at some of the things we can do and see. Will be a nice change away from home and looking at all the things that need doing, but don't seem to have the puff to do, very frustrating for someone who tends to go at things a bit like a bull at a gate. Maybe time to become the old cow for a while......and just plod along.
Hope you are still doing well Mares, take care and big hugs. xx

Hi ladies,
It's so good that we can check in with each other and know we are on the same journey but not alone. Annie I was shocked to hear how quickly you went down hill and didn't even know how serious you were until you took the temperature. That must have been so scarey. I am glad you are back and fighting fit and got round 2 in and that you will be able to have a great escape on your long weekend.
Anne, I can totally relate to you being emotional. I can feel myelf heating up with rage especailly with my two teenage children and I manage to escape to the garden and not chopping heads off. I am a sole provider but I have good friends and brother and sister-in-law nearby. Lucky, you have a great partner Anne. Sometimes we have to bite humble pie and allow others to walk the journey with us.
It is one hell of a journey, ne'r a dull moment. It took a week for the rash to settle. They are not sure whether it is the autoimmune disease or chemo symptoms. Igot an infected nail too so now I am on antihistamine and antibiotics. More pills to help that ratlle!!
I felt a little more vague after round 2. I came home and had a big sleep, but am not feeling as nauseated and fatigued the day after. I hope I can sleep this time around as I only slept for 3 hours nightly on the 1st week but then again I am on 10mgs of prednisone for the disease. So I am pumped. How are you feeling after round 2 Annie?
Enjoy a great weekend ladiesxxx

Thanks for your thoughts and support Anne. Went in for 2nd chemo today, not being sure if it would happen or not as still have sniffles, but great decided to go ahead, so all still on track at this early stage. Mmmm the emotions can be a bit much at times, and am sure my dog and cat think their Mum has finally flipped her lid!!!!!!!!!!
I am sure you treasure your partner Anne, and to have that support is wonderful, my friends are my support base, but not quite to that extent, but would be soooo much harder if I didn't have it. My daughter is also wonderful, even though it is from a distance, calling, texting and nice care parcels.
Hope all continues to go well and that the fluid is being able to be controlled. Take care xx

I hit the wall two days ago and was so emotional all day, crying at the drop of a hat or someone asking me how I was doing. I was just over everything, especially the intense "personal care" routine I'm now on, what with looking after nails, moisturising, gentle shampoo and creams and now lymphatic massage by my partner (who already has so much 'looking after' to do) to try to mitigate the fluid in my breast and reduce the swelling and having to watch out for fluid build up in my right arm. Aargh! :-) Anyhow, I felt back to myself the next day and back on track. Mares, I have a couple of dry-ish kind of spots on my face but no rash. I hope that settles down for you quickly. Yes you're right about my treatment, next Friday 6 is number two. I've not gone into work today as I have a cough and a bit of a cold so hoping it doesn't stay around too long or get any worse. Like Annie, I'm on a schedule to finish chemo at the end of August and I certainly don't want any delays. Other than that, I've been travelling pretty well after the first so will wait and see what happens after the next. Still have my head hair at this point but appears as though other hair has decided to start falling out this morning. Thinking of both of you today as you tick off number two :-) rest and take care of yourselves. I too am looking forward to our long weekend in WA so hope you get away as planned Annie xoSign in to react to this post
