Feeling hopeful again

For the past month I have really struggled emotionally. For over 3 years since my diagnosis in May 2013, I have kept myself positive by doing all that I could to help myself during treatment and recovery. This culminated in May this year with my Charity Challenge Trek for the Cancer Council to Everest Base Camp.

Just one month later I found out that my bone density (after just 10 months on Femara) had worsened to actual osteoporosis level in my spine. I felt defeated, constantly upset and more exhausted than at any other stage of this 'journey'. I had gone from feeling (and being actually very close to!) on top of the world to almost rock bottom emotionally.

All my doctors seemed to offer was medication for bone density which of course comes with potentially another set of side effects. At only 50 I could see my future could quite easily be even more medication to counter the side effects of that and so on. Before breast cancer I was fortunate to be the sort of person who rarely even needed a panadol. This was NOT a direction I wanted to head into, if I could help it.

Today I had my first visit to The Bone Clinic. I saw their Exercise Physiologist and Dietician. I start classes next week which are specifically designed to improve bone density. Everything they do is fully supervised and based on the latest research. They have given me hope that I can improve my situation through diet and the right type of exercise. They have 74 year olds who can do chin ups. I am going to be able to do a chin up (my first ever) before too long!!

They have many clients who have had cancer and have special classes for those who are going through treatment right now. As a few people have posted about recently on here, there is a lot of research showing that maintaining muscle during treatment can lead to better outcomes and make treatments such as chemo even more effective.

Even better news for me is that this facility is expanding next month to another site much closer to where I live on the Sunshine Coast (today's visit was on the south side of Brisbane). I feel happy, hopeful and capable again. With the right help I might be able to improve my position without resorting to more medication. Time will tell but I will be trying my hardest.

  • Hi Michelle,

I found out yesterday that they have a training center on the Gold Coast and I wondered if that would be handy to you. They are very accommodating and eager to help but yes, very busy. I was lucky I made my appointment about a month ago.

They do a bone density scan and a whole body scan that shows your body composition percentages too. My whole body bone density was actually within normal limits but on the low side of normal. Osteoporotic in the spine only. You get all those results straight away and the doctor explains what it all means and you can ask questions. The bonus is that all the bone density scans are complimentary because of the research component. They are using our results to learn more and improve treatments.

Then the exercise Physiologist does some base line assessments and checks that you are ok to start in the classes. I have to do the beginners classes in Brisbane but can then do the weekly training locally.

Aren't we lucky to now have this facility available? Hope you find it helpful too.

  • Hi Deanne,

So glad you are feeling happier again, and hope the programme works brilliantly for you.

I was just speaking to the Bone Clinic, and after the initial consultations there is a training centre 5 minutes from my door - talk about lucky - but first need to go to Brisbane for assessment.

Did you get your results immediately or did you need to go back again for them?

The online program looks good also.  Will be very interested to hear how you find it all as I wouldn't be able to get in there for a month - very busy people!  Their videos were inspiring and I am going to see my GP about a care plan.  Keep us posted with your progress.

  • It is amazing how many times in the last 3 and a bit years that I have felt very, very lucky. Lucky that we had moved closer to 'civilization' and medical facilities a few months before I was diagnosed.

Lucky that my girls were old enough to help out and look after themselves when I was diagnosed (just a few months before I was spending 2 hours plus a day ferrying them to school, work etc).

Lucky that I found my cancer when I did before it progressed any further.

Lucky that I met such wonderful people (like Sharon) who helped me to push myself to live as well as I could.

And now lucky that the Bone Clinic is opening a training facility just a 30 minute drive away!

It would be really wonderful if this type of facility was available in more locations. Hopefully their success will mean that others will follow. Hopefully in Cairns for you, Paula. ?? xxx

  • Wow, wow wow.

How fantastic to have access to that service... Let me know if they are moving to Cairns. :)

Good for you.  I too have osteopenia, close to osteoporosis.  I will definitely be looking up the online course..

So glad you are feeling better.  I will watch this space with interest.

    Paula :)

  • Yes, the mental confidence boost is just as good as the chance to help my bones! I was in such a slump but feel so much better about the future again. I will stay healthy and not let the side effects of treatment get me down!! I just needed the right people to help me. :-) Will certainly let you know when the first chin up happens - might even try to get a photo! xxx

  • So lovely to hear from you, Robyn! Yes I agree they do need to be in more places and I think as their research progresses this will probably happen. The amazing results they have had since starting up just 12 months ago are inspiring. They will soon have 4 facilities in south east Qld. I was going to do the online program but was so surprised and pleased to be told about their new place on the Sunny Coast opening up just at the right time for me. Please let me know how you go with it. xxx

  • Hi Deanne, How fantastic your starting on a regime that holds so much promise to improve your bone density. Apart from the bones the mental confidence boost is also awesome!! I think we will need to adjust a saying for you "Bones of Steel". ;-) let us know how you go with the training and when that first chin up happens. Xx Cath

  • Hi Deanne,I saw this post and felt I had to comment. As you know, like you,I have osteoporosis.I saw a program about the bone clinic on TV a few weeks ago. They have remarkable results, and they also have an online program, which I am about to sign up for. What a shame they are not in other major cities!I feel sure that with diet and exercise, osteoporosis can be managed very well.Good luck with it Deanne,I'm sure you will do really well.I will keep in touch and let you know how I am going,Cheers Robynxox

  • Deanne pleased to read you're on your way to combatting the bone density problem.

I hear you as I was an occasional panadol person before BC.

Enjoy the program and take care from Christine
