Blood test to replace mammo

Has anyone else heard or read about this? A research centre in England have successfully detected breast cancer using blood tests earlier than a mammogram would. They are currently doing further trials. How awesome would that be! I wonder if it will also detect metastatic. The blood test can apparently detect it up to five years before any symptoms appear. I am thinking the mammogram centres will try to block these trials ever coming to Australia. Oops, that is probably not a nice thing to say.
  • I am just wondering how it would work as it shows it is there before it is there! How would they know what area to treat and they couldn’t operate to take it out as it wasn’t there yet. I am presuming it is used to more closely monitor you if it says you have it so that they can jump on it as soon as it rears it’s ugly head. If that makes sense.
  • I doubt it would replace a mammogram as a blood test tells you it's there. ...but not where. It would possibly become part of add on diagnostic tool.
  • I checked on Google. This was first reported on in mid 2018 and then later in May 2019 with Australian researchers working on it. The team in Nottingham are working on assaying the antibody produced by the tumour.

However if the test is reliable and accurate it will be wonderful for early diagnosis.

  • That would definitely be a bonus, re mets, @Blossom1961 .... there are already 'cancer markers' in regular blood tests, but they are not specific to BC.  My husband had them regularly for the first 5 years after most of his stomach was removed back in 2010.

I reckon it would be a while before mammograms were 'done away with' and replaced by a blood test ..... even the prostate blood test has been known to be fairly erratic, as it is also hormone fed (as I understand it) and can change from day to day.

There is also this one that is being worked on as well, specifically aimed at identifying mets sooner ...

    I think I found it ....

    take care xxxx
  • @arpie Not sure, it just came up on my news page. It is currently being researched in Nottingham and they have currently tested it on 180 people. They are now going to test it on another 800 before releasing it as effective. I now have two friends with metastatic and am hoping it will help with finding this as well in future. Their uncertainty is traumatic for them and it would be great if this test helped prevent others from some of this trauma.

May not be a nice thing to say, but on the money. I read about this test about a month ago. However with my stuffed memory I cannot remember the journal it was published in.

What does stand out in my memory was that test is probably about 5 years away from being fully developed.

Will it ever come to Australia. I think it will. We women are not known for being silent.
