Hospital
Hello! I was diagnosed with breast cancer this week. I'm in Melbourne. Has anyone been or is currently undergoing treatment at a public hospital? What was the experience like? I'm reluctant to go to ...
Yes!!! go public, the treatments you get is exactly the same, Australia has great doctors and cancer centres in the public system. They all almost all ( maybe not tiny country hospitals) , have multi diciplinary teams and surgery, oncology and radiation departments that are all well practised at patient flow and treatment protocols.
Unles you have deep pockets and a heap of cash to spare.
There are so many expenses from medical appointments , scans, loss of work, transport/parking, chemist supplies for side effects , medicines not covered , rehab and so many other things , breast cancer gets real expensive, real fast and it goes on for months and months.
I have seen ladies at our BC support group rush into private hospital for surgery or chemo and radiation due to fear factor and possible wait times. Then suffer the financial consequences as the months go on. Just because they thought it was 'best' to go private. But I have seen 100s of women come through our support group and they get the same personlaised cancer treatments public or private.
Breast recon is ridiculously expensive, ( as well as many other negatives)
If you have a public hospital near you that can provide you treatment ,then go for it. Even if you have basic or fancy private health insurance .
