What to ask at the first Radiology meeting with doctor?

Are there any particular things I should ask when I have my first meeting with the Radiology doctor?  I'm in the Public System in WA.  I see comments about Mepitel Film and Strata XRT.  Are these things they will bring up or do I?  Any hints appreciated.  Thanks.

  • I’m having my final radiation tomorrow. I had a video consultation with the radiation oncologist initially then a phone consultant with a nurse. Was quickly checked by the nurse to make sure my wound was healed at the planning meeting and apart from a temperature check each day haven’t seen them at all. Probably cause I haven’t needed to. I believe I see one tomorrow though. I had to take my own dressing gown each time, not sure why, but they aren’t using the changing rooms because of covid19 and I’ve had to strip in the room where the radiation is done. I’ve been using the Moogoo udder cream and hadn’t been told about the ones you mentioned, only QV cream.
  • Hi TerryTee
I have recently finished my radiation in the public system in Perth.
You may want to consider asking for a morning or afternoon appointment to fit in with work or kids.  I had my appointments late in the afternoon to enable me to fit in work.  They will then give you a list of all your appointments for the radiation.
I agree that you have limited contact with the consultant but you get to know those who operate the machine and the nurses very well. The nurses will advise you on skin care and what products you should use.  Everyone I came across was lovely.
hope it goes well for you 🤗
  • TerryTee, your appointment will go through where you will be having your radiation, how many sessions, you will meet the nurse who you will be in close contact with throughout your treatment.
A technician will go through the procedure and what is involved and do measurements so when you start Radiotherapy the radiologist will have everything adjusted for your treatment ready when you arrive.
When you start Radiotherapy you are in and out very quickly, it is so well organised.

The dr will go through your case and how much treatment is recommended, the nurse will go through any side affects related to radiation treatment, they will discuss creams, what to do before and after daily treatment. I found the nursing staff where I went, to be so good and always had time for you. You will be given information booklets.

I started preparing for Radiotherapy in purchasing Moo Goo udder cream for using after treatment. There are many other creams, just remember to apply  several times a day after treatment to keep your skin moisturised.
Purchase some crop tops, something that is easy to get on and off for comfort, also stops the cream from spoiling your clothing.Drink plenty of fluids.
I can’t specifically remember what questions I had asked as the nurse went through things so thoroughly.

I found my experience very positive, I hope you have the same.
    Sending hugs x

  • Yes this will be my planning meeting and I don’t know what I need to know!
  • Hi TerryTee, bring up those things most definitely.
Have you had your planning appointment done yet?
Just know your own diagnosis , anything that has happened along the way during treatment to make sure that the dr is on the same page as you.
You will see the dr and also a nurse. The nurse will be your best friend, any issues ask to see the nurse during treatment, they are there for you.
You will probably only see the dr 3 times during treatment.

Good luck, Radiotherapy is a walk in the park compared to other treatments.xx
