Sore feet

Hi Ladies, I finished chemo in January and am just wondering if any of you suffered with peripheral neuropathy? My hands aren't too bad now but am still suffering with very painful feet when I walk. Not sure if its still the effects of the chemo or not. Does anyone know how long chemo hangs around in our bodies? I had 3 FEC and 3 docetaxel. Hope you are all going ok. Xx

  • Hi. Ihad a recurrence so actually did chemo twice in 18 mths and suffered really badly after second lot. Two years down the track and it is much better. Still have pain in ball of the foot on one foot only near heavy duty walking shoes with a very thick sole at work as am on my feet all day and am much better with them. It does get much better though Paula :)
  • I am taking soluble magnesium and I make sure I have seafood twice a week.  I really notice the stiffness if I dont have the magnesium.  I noticed a big relief when I had a weeks holiday and ate fresh prawns every day, so I have increased the seafood and take some fish oil as well.  Hope you find a solution soon.

    Take care

  • Hi there, I still suffer from peripheral neuropathy, and I finished my chemo over a year ago (identical regime to you actually!).  It has been particularly bad for the last 6 weeks, which my breast care nurse has suggested may be down to the cooler weather (God help me if I return to the UK and its weather!)  She has suggested to me trying to keep my hands and feet warm, and to try massaging them regularly.  It's not crippling me, but its always there dull and nagging in the background which is quite frustrating!  I also get painful cramps/pins & needles very regularly.  My BC nurse said that for some women the neuropathy can last for several years post treatment, and for a small minority it may never go away :-(

If you find any other remedies, I'd love to know!

  • It's just over a year since I finished chemo, and although my feet aren't completely normal, they are vastly improved.  I found making myself walk in the mornings (when I was hobbling) slowly improved the aching bones, and ginger slices in green tea also helped fade the pain.  (I appreciated this when I ran out of fresh ginger and noticed the difference!)  If it was bad at night, osteo-panadol helped.

Now I am back on the treadmill in the gym, and doing morning beach walks, and there are days when I forget there was any problem.  Still stiff in the mornings, though, until I've had my sencha tea and a walk.

It's a catch 22 isn't it?  Have to walk to feel better, but would like to feel better before walking!  Hands also stiff at first, but loosen up quicker than feet.

It does improve over time.  All the best - let us know how you are going.

    Michelle xx
