Radiation .... Still Gifting ?
Afternoon Ladies, hope today finds you all as well as can be and doing something enjoyable on this lovely autumn day . I have a question for anyone who has had a lumpectomy followed by radiation with no chemo involved ........ I was rushed to ED last week with a suspected stroke which turned out to be a Hemiplegic Migraine .... It was all ever so scary as I have never had even an ordinary migraine in my life and could possibly every little headache I have ever had on two hands ...... Has anyone else suffered anything like this more than 6 months post rads ?? I am stressed to the max about it... So frightened I will have more..... There is not really any rhyme or reason to it... Was just calmly sitting watching TV ( being lazy in truth) when it hit me , I don't take any meds other than my sleepers which I have taken for yonks , am still getting an awful lot of ' take my breath away and double me up ' breast pain but other than that I have been going ok..... Thank you for reading and any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Hug ((())) to all ????

Homestly, as scary as it is right now I promisse it is not that bad long term. You learn quickly enough to recognise initial symptoms way way way before they go full blown and you do lose ability to speak.
And you will.find that if you do pop those 2 paracetamol and just calm down and take it very easy symltoms reverse themselves very quickly.
I mean they may not always go away completely but you know that if you start getting better it is not a stroke so no reason to worry and that alone gives you peaJel
I deal with them when they happen and I do not bother getting scans at the time frankly as it is obvious after a while it is just a migraine.
Again, I am some 20 years into this so easy for me to say "do not stress" and you will learn how to calm yourself as it starts to happen.
I guess I just want you to know that once the initial shock is over you will really get used to those symptoms and it will be far easier to deal with than typical 'searing pain' migraines as this one only sometimes come with pain. Also, in the begining they are more frequent but as time goes on they are less and less frequent and sometimes there is even couple of years between 2 'attacks'
Just hang in there - it really does get better.
Hugs

Thanks Jel , gosh ! I feel bad for even complaining reading your post ! You have been thru a lot ?? Yes the symptoms you describe are exactly the way I was , loss of feeling , unable to talk or swallow ( that was the really frightening part ) my head felt as if it were going to explode and I couldn't if i tried put a sentence together even if I could talk .... It was all horrible and terrifying ... I have been given the same advice as you , with a Hemiplegic Migraine you can have the stroke like symptoms but no headache , a headache but no other symptoms or you can get them all together as I did .... I need to take meds at the first sign of any symptoms , give it one hour and if no relief off to ED ........ And go thru the whole CT MRI protocol just in case it is a stroke .. FMD ! Can't catch a break this year aaarrrrggghhh. Take good care ??

It was Lyn , very , no guarantees that it won't happen again so that's scary too .... It's helped to read tho that no one else seems to have had anything similar so at least I can maybe rule out the radiation ( I have a habit of blaming it for everything ! ) Am so glad your headaches have subsided , it's nice to get a break from something hey !! ?? You take good care. (())

I have not had radiation yet but regardless migraines just come and go and if you have had migraines in the past you are likely to get different types down the rad..
Since my mid 20s I had started getting a migraine that mimics a stroke and has absolutely no pain involvedWhen having an attack of that particular type of migraine i will get 2 or more of these symptoms: half my face will droop, I will start to lose feeling in (and control off) half my body, I will have trouble speaking (and speak gibberish), I will, lose hand / eye coordination, if typing I will type gibberish (and not realise it - i will reread what was typed and not even register it is gibberish until the recipient returns my e-mail asking WTF? and the message will be just a bunch of random letters typed in what (in appearance) resembles words....
As i also have 2 cerebral anyrisams I am at a risk of having a stroke so as you cam imagine appearance of these symptoms sent me i a tail spin and had early on resulted in my visiting Emergency on many occasions...
How does one know that it is not a stroke - short of imaging the head at the time there is no way really - the difference is that my symptoms will eventually pass....Several months after this started happening I was very fortunate to have had a senior neurosurgeon be asked to examine me in the Emergency (after I had been wheeled in 4 times in under 3 days) and what he had told me has worked so well i advise anyone suffering from migraines to do it.
What he said was that if in the early stages (ie when the very initial symptoms appear) I take 2 Paracetamol tables and darken the room and stay still within 20 minutes symptoms will ease up or dissapear altogether IF it is migraine as that dose of paracetamol taken early enough will resolve any migraine.
If the symptoms do not get better OR if they continue to worsen then i may have a reason to worry and need to call 000.
Offcourse it is a good idea to have someone stay with you as you take the paracetamol (jusst in case it is not a migraine and you become unable to make the phone call).
Do note that for this to work Paractamol needs to be taken at the 1st sign of symptoms (and not just when pain hits as by the time pain hits migraine may have progressed too much to be stopped so simply)I know this may not help with your original question BUT if you do continue to suffer form that migraine i hope this may help you maybe manage the symptoms and relieve some of the worry and fear and prevent some of the trips to Emergency you may otherwise make
Hugs

Hi Scanxious (love the name, Kathy). Did they say the migraine was related to your radiotherapy? Not something I've heard of. I finished radiotherapy just over 4 months ago. Pre BC I got a lot of headaches, which I've now realised were migraines, after they responded to migraine medications. Since going into a chemo induced menopause, I've barely had one! It's been wonderful. Hope it doesn't happen again for you. It must have been extremely scary.
Take care, Lyn

Hi Kathy, my treatment was similar to yours, lumpectomy and radiation. I have also now started hormone therapy. I think we become more sensitive to any changes in our body and worry that it could be caused by the BC treatment. I stopped radiation a month ago, I have had more headaches than normal but no migraines. I hope your migraine was a once off occurrence and you continue to get stronger everyday. :-) Sandra
