Radiation Side Effects Broken Skin Tips?

Hi everyone. I am on day 8 of post radiation and the skin in my under breast and just below breast in the crease has peeled and is basically red raw. Is truly distressing and awful. I have large breasts so it's so hard to manage due to the weight. I am putting on StrataXRT and trying to let it dry by lifting the breast up but when working and walking around it's so painful and is so red and sore. I wanted to ask you all if you have any tips on this and how long it takes to stop weeping and breaking off? I got very upset about it as is so horrible and will be speaking with my nurse but wanted to reach out to the community to ask for any advice or similar situations. Hope I haven't over shared on the details of the horribleness.

  • Hello kittykatster ,

Aww that is so painful and you have a few days of treatment ahead of you too.

Strata XRT is amazing cream but I also used another one in conjunction with it & I call it a miracle cream! GOULDS radiotherapy cream comes from a naturopathy in Hobart.

    It's about $30 for a tub and I used about 1 1/2 tubs.

Made from calendula & beeswax, it's more like an ointment..yellow and smelly but works a treat! Very soothing! It stains clothes so I bought some cheap black t- shirts from kmart that I could throw away once it was all over.

    Goulds Natural Medicine https://share.google/oiHWEWSsssyxsZMwp

I used Strata xrt after my shower each morning before I went for radiation sessions, then once I got home I lathered the Goulds generously all over the area.

Then each evening another shower (yes 2 a day!) and re applied the Strata xrt for over night.

    It was a dream remedy.

The evidence showed in the patch I missed under my arm...3rd degree burn there!!

I still took weeks of healing after the radiation so kept up the creams for about a month after finishing.

I did have a skin infection early on that needed antibiotics, & then towards the end I reacted  to the cortisone cream they wanted me to use, breaking out in severe exzema and had to use Diprosone to clear it up so it certainly wasn't a walk in the park by any means.

But now a year later, my implant reconstruction which the Dr said would almost certainly fail is still thriving & he says he's never seen skin so good after radiation! Not even any tan to show for the weeks of skin trauma.

By all means show your radiation oncologist and they will have some suggestions to help you too.

Hang in there..you will get through it.

  • kittykatster That sounds painful and distressing for you :( I had the end-of-radiation chat a few days ago and was told that sort of reaction can occur.

From what I was told, that kind of reaction may require dressings. The nurse told me that I should go back to show them, or send them a photo to assess so they can give instructions (which may mean having to go back to see them).

My nurse gave me extra sorbolene (I think they said to use that for a few months but I have to check with my partner cause he remembers this stuff better than I do) as well as an antibacterial cream to use for a few days but I didn't have any broken skin.

Because it sounds like your skin has broken, I would get an expert opinion.

I'm sorry that you're going through that but hopefully the medical people can help make it comfortable for you.
