Radiation burns

WARNING: This post contains images that may be triggering to some members and is possibly NSFW - BCNA

Hi ladies, this is nearly two weeks post radiation treatment. My skin is very tight especially under my arm and I can't get my arm up very high as it feels like the skin will rip open. I am very sore (to be expected)but no weeping

wounds. Nurses told me put sudacrem on skin. I'm using moogoo and applying the sudacrem to the broken areas. What did you find helped you.
Thanks
  • You poor thing LMK74. Looks very painfull.

I am starting my 5th week of 6 Radiation and have had the Mepitel Film on from the start. My skin is a little red but nothing like it might off been. Can't understand why it is not offered to everybody.

  • Oh dear your poor body, I have no expereince with this as I have only had palliative radiotherapy to my back and that was just one long session only, it makes me realize just what you ladies have to endure, Im sure that the suggestions here will be able to help you,

  • Those photos look so ouchy!  Hope something soothing, lots of suggestions above, will help with the healing!  Take care
  • So sorry this has happened to you! Have you tried pure Aloe Vera gel? You can buy it at the chemist or if you know someone with a plant (more fiddly as you have to split the plant to get at the gel) grab some. It is very soothing and has wonderful healing properties. All the best, Julie x
  • Hi LMK74

So sorry to see the burn. I am quite upset that this problem can be prevented or at least minimised.  2 1/2 years ago I had rads  5 days a week  for 6 weeks without any burn or even a red mark. This is because the private clinic where I had my treatment applied a Mepitel Film prior to the radiation and the film was left on the breast until the end of the treatment.

I have been told that they don't use this film in the public system because of the cost involved so that is the  disadvantage side while you get free treatment from the public system. I hope you will recover from the burn soon.

  • @Molly001, my god that looks painful. You wonder how any of this can be good for us lol. I used bepanthen also and found it soothing for the itching. Itch is now under control with antihistamines. I will get some bio oil to try.
@Zoffiel, anything that removes the scabs quickly sounds good to me . I'm sick of waking up in the morning buried in flaking skin everywhere lol.
    Thanks ladies
  • Ouch, Lisa! Bio oil. Which feels a bit creepy and tends to make the scabs slough off, but seems to help. You'll turn around in a couple of days and find the pain has lessened, but the tightness can go on for a while.
  • Hi @LMK74 OUCH!!! I burnt badly also but my skin didn't feel tight, really, until after the peeling stopped and the skin was all new. Two months post and the skin is still dark, tight and thin, particularly along the scar. I used bepanthen nappy rash cream whilst broken and then switched to a moisturiser and recently to bio oil. I healed very quickly. My nurse highly recommended calendula cream, which I used early on until the peeling started.  I attached a pic too so you can see that my skin was more gooey than tight. Hope you heal soon!
