Port Insurted chemo starts on monday

Hi Ladies,

I had my Port inserted yesterday ready to start Chemo on Monday I must say very painful but not too bad I have 6 cycles of chemo 1 every 3 weeks went and had my info session at the cancer center which made everything very sureal but I knew that would be happening sooner or later they also gave me a tour of the facility actually very nice and the nurses, doctors and staff are very nice so I feel more at ease now, I suppose I'll get used to having the port a cath but at the moment it feels weird and tender my surgeon gave me very strong painkillers which I will only take at night as they wipe me out, I suppose it actually hasn't been 24 hours yet but the port sure feels weird I'll have it in for 18 weeks as my Chemo goes for 18 weeks. well that's all for now as I am wiped and very tired I suppose just a sign of what's to come, sending lots of cuddles to everyone I'd love some advice about ports if I can.Anitaxxx

  • Hi Anita, I always read your posts with interest, and have followed your journey so far with interest. I am having chemo 1st, before surgery. Will be having my 4th cycle next week. I opted to have a port put in up front, as I have shocking peripheral veins. Yes, it was painful to start with. I had it inserted on a Friday, 1st chemo was the following Tuesday. It was still swollen & tender at that point, but within a very short period it improved immensely. It's now over 2 months since it was inserted, and I forget that it's there, most of the time. I would say that it's the best thing I could have done, as it means I don't have to worry about whether they'll find a vein each treatment! Hope that's helpful.

    take care, Lyn

  • Hi Anita sorry can't help with info about port, I didn't have one luckly my veins survived the treatment. Good luck for Monday once you start the closer you are to the finish, sending you a hug and a smilexx
